MANCHIN ANNOUNCES WEBPAGE TO SUBMIT SPEED TEST RESULTS, LEARN MORE ABOUT EFFORTS TO IMPROVE INTERNET CONNECTIVITY IN WEST VIRGINIA

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) announced a new webpage where constituents can complete and submit an internet speed test to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and learn more about the fight to bring reliable broadband to rural communities across West Virginia.

The webpage can be accessed from a computer or mobile device at manchin.senate.gov/speedtest. If you are experiencing internet speeds below the FCC’s definition of broadband, which is 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload, Senator Manchin wants to hear from you.

Speed test results submitted on the new webpage will be sent to Ajit Pai, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), to highlight incorrect broadband coverage maps of West Virginia and support the need for the formation of a public feedback system to better assess broadband coverage across rural states like West Virginia.

“Without access to the internet, citizens can’t learn, apply for jobs, launch new businesses, or become members of society who can give back to their communities,” Senator Manchin said. “That’s why I’m asking all West Virginians to submit your internet speed tests, so we can prove to the Federal Communications Commission that our broadband coverage is well below the stated coverage. So far, West Virginians’ efforts have helped the FCC acknowledge that our providers are overstating their coverage, but we must continue to show where and how widespread the lack of broadband coverage is in West Virginia.”

MANCHIN STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT TRUMP'S FY 2021 BUDGET PROPOSAL

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) issued the following statement on President Trump’s FY 2021 budget proposal and how it will affect West Virginia.

“West Virginians always take care of each other. We provide food to those who are hungry, shelter to those in need, and support to anyone who needs a helping hand. As governor, I learned that our budgets are a reflection of our priorities and the Administration’s FY 2021 budget is not in line with West Virginia values or priorities. This budget creates roadblocks to accessing Medicare and Medicaid directly affecting the lives of hundreds of thousands of West Virginians, severely underfunds or outright eliminates economic development programs that greatly benefit our state, and yet somehow still leaves our country with nearly $1 trillion in deficits. It’s unacceptable. I always think of my grandmother Momma Kay’s saying ‘if you can count your blessings you can share your blessings’. Some Americans can count their blessings, and it’s time we work so that everyone can. I hope that in the coming months Congress and the President can agree on a reasonable, fiscally responsible but socially compassionate budget that works for all Americans.”

Last week Senator Manchin sent a letter to the President outlining the West Virginia priorities that he will be working to include in the budget as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

MANCHIN LEADS COLLEAGUES IN ADVOCATING FOR VETERANS WITH ISSUES RELATED TO AGENT ORANGE EXPOSURE

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) led 42 Democratic Senators in advocating for the Trump Administration to add health conditions so Vietnam Veterans suffering from health conditions associated with their exposure to Agent Orange can receive critical benefits. In their letter, the Senators specifically called on the Administration to end the years-long delay of adding Bladder Cancer, Hypothyroidism, Parkinsonism, and Hypertension to the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) list of service-connected presumptive conditions.

“Your Administration’s refusal to add these conditions to the presumptive list continues to deny more than 190,000 sick and aging Veterans the health care and compensation they have earned and desperately need,” wrote the Senators. “More than fifty years after their service and sacrifice, these Veterans continue to suffer the detrimental effects of their exposure each day. These heroes deserve more than inaction and indecision from their own government— they deserve justice.”

MANCHIN STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF RAAMIE BARKER

“Gayle and I are terribly saddened to hear of the passing of Raamie Barker and we, along with the Chapmanville community, will keep them in our prayers during this difficult time. Raamie was a dear friend of mine. I always knew I could trust him to give honest advice because when he gave you guidance, you knew that it came from his heart. Raamie was a tireless public servant. He served as Chapmanville’s mayor, Earl Ray Tomblin’s Chief of Staff in the West Virginia Legislature and Senior Advisor during his time as Governor. As Editor for the Logan Banner and Williamson Daily News, publisher of Coal Valley News, and copy editor for the Beckley Register-Herald, Raamie ensured that West Virginians received quality news from across the state. Gayle and I send our deepest condolences to Raamie’s friends and family, especially his wife Bunny, his children Josh, Ashlee, Courtenay, Carolyn, Penny, and Tammy, and their grandchildren and will keep them in our thoughts during this incredibly hard time.”

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE WEST VIRGINIANS SELECTED FOR SENATE YOUTH PROGRAM

U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) announced high schoolers Joshua Hatfield of Verdunville and Carson Winkie of Bridgeport have been selected to represent West Virginia for the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP).

"I look forward to meeting with this year’s student delegates from West Virginia, Joshua and Carson and having them with us here in Washington," Senator Manchin said. "Joshua and Carson are both incredible young people who have exhibited tremendous leadership through their commitment to their studies and involvement in their communities. These young leaders are the future of our state and their passion for our democracy is inspiring. I’m confident they will represent our great state well when they are here in Washington."

MANCHIN, ROUNDS LEAD COLLEAGUES IN LETTER TO INTERNATIONAL TRADE COMMISSION URGING PROPER ENFORCEMENT OF TRADE LAWS

U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Mike Rounds (R-SD)  led 23 of their Senate colleagues in a letter to International Trade Commission (ITC) Chairman David Johanson urging action against illegal Chinese trade practices that have unfairly harmed the American kitchen cabinet industry. It has been estimated that the American cabinet industry has suffered as much as $4 billion in harm as a result of China’s unfair trading practices.

“American manufacturers of kitchen cabinets, which collectively employ more than 250,000 Americans, have been suffering the impact of illegal Chinese dumping on American markets,” wrote the senators in their letter. “When foreign countries are allowed to take these actions, workers and their families right here at home are harmed. Data from the International Trade Commission’s preliminary investigation into Chinese cabinet dumping found that the domestic cabinet industry pays an hourly wage of $17.20. Workers who hold these jobs are able to make meaningful contributions to communities large and small across our country. The loss of a kitchen cabinet manufacturer has an outsized impact in small-town America, which is already struggling with a weakened farm economy.”

ENERGY & NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE CONSIDER DOI, OSMRE NOMINEES

The U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee held a business meeting to consider pending nominations. Ms. Katharine MacGregor, nominated to be Deputy Secretary of the Interior, previously passed out of committee by a recorded vote of 14-6. In December, the Committee held a hearing on Mr. Lanny Erdos’s nomination to be the Director of the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) at the Department of the Interior, but did not vote on him. Both Ms. MacGregor and Mr. Erdos passed out of the committee by voice vote today.

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), Ranking Member of the Committee, has previously expressed his support for both nominees and reaffirmed that support today.

“Both nominees are well qualified and are currently serving in their positions on an acting basis. Both have demonstrated their ability to do the jobs for which they have been nominated. I voted for Ms. MacGregor when the Committee reported her nomination last November and I will do so again this morning. I also support Mr. Erdos’s nomination to head the Office of Surface Mining. I am especially anxious for the Senate to confirm his nomination because of the great importance of his office to coal mining states like West Virginia,” Ranking Member Manchin said. “Again, I will vote for both nominees and urge my colleagues to do so as well.”
