ON THE ROAD

This weekend, as Ranking Member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, I held a field hearing in Beckley to receive testimony on the New River Gorge Park & Preserve Act, which Senator Capito and I introduced. This legislation would redesignate the New River Gorge National River as the New River Gorge Park and Preserve. This field hearing was yet another important opportunity to gather feedback from West Virginians about this exciting opportunity for our state. Our goal is to make sure that we provide for protection of the national park resources while at the same time preserving the hunting and sporting culture and heritage of this amazing area. Every perspective is important and I appreciate those who came out to engage in this important discussion.

I kicked off my Huntington town hall last week by announcing more than $434k for Marshall University's allergy, immunology, and transplantation research. Marshall conducts essential research that impacts countless lives, and I look forward to their continued great work in medical research.

It was great to be back in Huntington to hear from West Virginians and talk about the issues that matter here at home like broadband, healthcare, and the FY 21 budget. I’m proud to represent the Mountain State and I’ll continue to fight for West Virginians every day in the U.S. Senate.

Thank you to the WV Nurses Association for allowing me to speak about the healthcare crisis our country is facing and the work I am doing to fix the Affordable Care Act, improve access to healthcare for patients and protect patients with preexisting conditions.

On Friday I heard from more than 150 West Virginians at a town hall event at the University of Charleston about issues that matter to them, including college affordability, healthcare, funding for the arts and humanities, and the opioid epidemic.

I was proud to join all West Virginians in wishing our very own former Governor Gaston Caperton a very Happy 80th Birthday over the weekend. I submitted a Congressional Record Statement to honor the life and legacy of this proud West Virginian and dear friend to many, myself included.

See one of our recent success stories below:

Mr. Brock contacted the Senator's office requesting assistance with obtaining his back payments from the SSA. Mr. Brock was  awarded SSD in July 2019 and was receiving his monthly benefits, but his retro payments were delayed. Caseworker Gerrie Greene contacted the SSA payment Center in Baltimore for a status update on the release of his funds. On Nov 8, 2019, the payment center released his funds.
