MANCHIN: RURAL HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS NEED MORE FUNDING
Charleston, WV – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) released the following statement on West Virginia healthcare providers receiving funding allocated specifically for rural providers in the additional emergency response funding package.
“Today West Virginia was awarded $159.6 million for our rural healthcare providers. This is welcome news and I hope it will aid our underfunded rural providers. But we can do better. West Virginia ranks sixth for the highest number of rural providers in the country receiving these funds, but despite that ranking we received the 29th highest payment. That doesn’t add up. My proposed formula would prioritize vulnerable populations – like WV with our high elderly population – and communities with a high number of Medicaid recipients. This would ensure rural communities across West Virginia and the country would receive the resources they need to provide top-notch healthcare throughout this pandemic,” said Senator Manchin.
MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE $100K FOR COVID-19 RESEARCH AT WVU
Charleston, WV – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $109,440 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the West Virginia University Research Corporation. This funding will be used to research how Appalachians respond to the COVID-19 pandemic in order to better understand how to disseminate information in similar crises in the future.
“The COVID-19 pandemic suddenly changed every West Virginian and American life. We have adjusted to new ways of living, working, and socializing. And we are all inundated with information about this pandemic from every angle,” said Senator Manchin. “I am pleased that West Virginia University (WVU) will be conducting research on the effect of this crisis on Americans in rural Appalachia and how the participants change their views on the COVID-19 pandemic over time. West Virginia continues to lead in research and innovation and I am proud of WVU as they work to understand the long term effects of this virus on our society, specifically rural Appalachia.”
MANCHIN APPLAUDS DISTRIBUTION OF RURAL HEALTHCARE PROVIDER COVID-19 RESPONSE FUNDING
Charleston, WV – Today U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) applauded the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announcement that rural healthcare providers will begin to receive funding from the additional COVID-19 emergency response funding that was passed last week.
“I continue to hear from healthcare professionals across West Virginia who desperately need financial support in order to continue caring for their fellow West Virginians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of our health providers were functioning on shoestring budgets before the coronavirus pandemic forced them to cease elective procedures, their main source of support to slow the spread of COVID-19, said Senator Manchin. “I am pleased HHS will begin distributing funding to our rural hospitals and health centers across the state and am thrilled that the dedicated funding for rural healthcare providers is being delivered so quickly. We must continue to fight for dedicated rural funding in future COVID-19 emergency response funding packages so that our hospitals and health centers can continue to care for all West Virginians.”
MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE OPPORTUNITY FOR ADDITIONAL RELIEF FUNDING FOR HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS ACROSS WEST VIRGINIA
Charleston, WV – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced the eligibility for additional relief funding for higher-education institutions across West Virginia. This emergency funding is made available through the U.S. Department of Education, which received additional funding in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) that was signed into law on Friday, March 27. This funding will be available in support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and strengthening HBCU’s Master programs, as well as the U.S. Department of Education’s Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP) and the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) which ensures each institution has received at least $500,000 in light of the pandemic.
“Across West Virginia, colleges and universities are dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on their students and institutions. This funding will help ensure that our students can continue their education in the Mountain State through this terrible crisis while ensuring our higher education institutions are able to stay afloat and provide the quality education our students deserve. I will continue to fight for our colleges and universities so they receive the support and funding they deserve,” said Senator Manchin.
MANCHIN HEARS FROM WEST VIRGINIA COUNTY OFFICIALS AMID CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
Charleston, WV – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) participated in a call with West Virginia county officials to hear their concerns about the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Senator Manchin has advocated for the next COVID-19 emergency relief package to have more flexible, dedicated funding for state and local governments to combat the pandemic and take care of their communities.
“West Virginia’s county officials are on the front lines of the economic crisis that is being caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Today I answered questions from county officials across our state and heard their concerns,” said Senator Manchin. “When Congress passed the CARES Act in March, we allocated $150 billion specifically for state and local governments, but the Trump Administration put unnecessary restrictions on what the funding can be used for. This week I called on the Administration to revise these rules so the funding can be quickly distributed to the state and local governments who are fighting this terrible pandemic head on.”
