MAY WE NEVER FORGET

MANCHIN HONORS THOSE LOST ON SEPTEMBER 11TH AND ALL FALLEN SERVICE HEROES ON 19TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11

Charleston, WV – On the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) paid his respects to those lost on September 11, 2001 and all our Fallen service heroes with Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, Hershel “Woody” Williams at the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery. Senator Manchin also rode to the Gold Star monument in Barboursville and encouraged others to pay their respects to the Fallen in their own way today to maintain COVID-19 safety precautions. To view pictures from the wreath laying and ride, please click here.

“Nineteen years ago, our nation was changed forever by the most devastating domestic attack on America since Pearl Harbor that claimed 2,977 innocent lives. Most Americans can tell you where they were as the entire nation watched first responders and citizens risk their lives without hesitation to save their fellow Americans from the destruction caused by the terrorist attacks. In the aftermath, we came together as a nation, showing we were united, resilient, and courageous in the face of tragedy. Since September 11th, over four million Americans answered the call to serve and 5,000 Americans gave their lives in defense of our nation. The cost of these sacrifices is clear in our memorials like the ones I visited today.

“Today we honor and remember those lost and those who bravely answered the call to serve. As we reflect on this day, I encourage all West Virginians to recommit themselves to service, family, community, and country. We will never forget the innocent lives lost this day and the sacrifices made to protect our nation. May God bless us all and may God bless the United States of America.”

WORKING FOR YOU

MANCHIN AND CAPITO URGE DEA TO KEEP OPIOID EPIDEMIC A PRIORITY DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Charleston, WV – Today, U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) led a bipartisan letter to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Acting Director Timothy Shea urging the DEA to keep the opioid epidemic a priority in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Specifically, the Senators requested information about how the DEA’s work to combat the opioid epidemic has been impacted by COVID-19 and how the agency has adjusted operations to address this challenge.

A recent article published in the Wall Street Journal highlights the additional stress those fighting opioid addiction now face in the midst of job loss, shutdowns, and social distancing.

“America is facing one of its greatest challenges today in the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Senators wrote. “While the federal government is engaged in every effort to beat this virus, it is also critical that we not lose sight of the opioid epidemic which continues to ravage our nation. Unfortunately, the same tactics which help us to stop the spread of COVID-19 are creating circumstances which have made tackling the opioid epidemic significantly more difficult.

MANCHIN STATEMENT ON PARTISAN COVID-19 RELIEF PACKAGE

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) released the following statement on a procedural vote to take up to Mitch McConnell’s partisan COVID-19 relief package.

“If I hadn't held out the last time Mitch McConnell tried to ram through a COVID bill, West Virginia wouldn't have $1.25 billion in state and local funding. The easy thing to do would be to vote "yes," but the right thing to do is to put politics aside and do our job. With today’s partisan vote failing, I am hopeful we can immediately come together to pass a bill that helps the West Virginians who need it like we did six months ago on March 27th.”

TESTING

Where can I get a test? This is a question my office has received since the beginning of this pandemic. Please note that this is not a comprehensive list; there may be more testing sites out there that are added daily.  In order to provide as much reliable information as possible, I am including testing sites that are verified through an official communication or news release.

For any organizations or health care organizations who would like their site listed, or who have updates on their hours or requirements, please email me at common_sense@manchin.senate.gov .

It is recommended that you seek testing only when you begin exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19. Click here to view the screening criteria. To report your symptoms and be directed to one of the available testing sites, contact your primary care doctor or a designated hotline for your area. Most, if not all, sites require a physician's order before testing. If you have gone through these steps and are still having issues getting a test, please email me at common_sense@manchin.senate.gov and a member of my staff will reach out to you to see if we can assist.
