ON THE ROAD

This week, my staff had the distinct honor of attending a dedication ceremony celebrating expansions and renovations at Roane General Hospital. The improvements were made possible by a strong partnership between the federal and state government, county and city officials, and the hospital itself. The celebration was a testament to what we in the Mountain State are known for – working together to move our state forward. I truly appreciate the efforts of the CEO Doug Bentz, Roane General administrators, board members, physicians, employees, and friends for providing excellent care and friendly service for so many years, and for ensuring a healthier tomorrow for the region.

The citizens of Braxton County recently celebrated new monuments dedicated to the veterans of Burnsville and the Salt Lick District from World War I to present, and all of our nation’s heroes. As a statewide community, let us never forget the sacrifices made by the men and women who have come before us, the remarkable individuals who served our nation so bravely. I thank all the Veterans and family members for the sacrifices they have made to preserve the freedoms we hold dear – life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

HOW MAY WE HELP YOU?

As a result of devastating flooding early this year, Charleston residents Cheryl McGhee and her family lost the only access to their home when swift flood water severely damaged their access bridge. Ms. McGhee, who is the sole caretaker of her two great-grandchildren, was forced into dangerous alternative access routes to and from her home. Each day the family walked narrow foot paths through dense woods just to perform daily living tasks and errands. Mrs. McGhee exhausted several resources, including an application for assistance with FEMA. While her FEMA application was awarded, it only provided $200 toward the total cost of the bridge replacement.

In July, David Parks from the City of Charleston, Mayors Office of Economic and Community Development, reached out to my Regional Coordinator, Brian Aluise, to request help for Mrs. McGhee and her family. Brian connected the family to my constituent services team, and my caseworker Amber McCartney immediately contacted Ms. McGhee to see how we could offer help. Amber assisted Mrs. McGhee in filing a detailed appeal to FEMA for federal disaster assistance. In less than 30 days, the family received notification that FEMA awarded them a grant that would cover the full cost of their access bridge.

I am happy to report that Mrs. McGhee and her family dedicated their new access bridge on November 2, 2021, and my office had the opportunity to celebrate with her. I am also happy to report that a local Charleston contractor was awarded the contract to replace the bridge, further supporting our local economy.

If you or someone you know is in need of assistance with a state or federal agency, please contact my office at 304-342-5855. My staff and I are always ready to help fellow West Virginians!
