The West Virginia Department of Health is partnering with the American Red Cross Central Appalachia Region to increase the number of blood donations in the area. The blood supply has currently fallen to critically low levels and donations are needed right now to help alleviate the shortage. Winter months are a challenging time for blood supply due to lower donor turnout around holidays, severe weather and respiratory season. During National Blood Donor Month, I encourage all West Virginians to consider giving blood.

Donors may also make an appointment at RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-733-2767 or download the Red Cross Blood Donor App.

I stopped by the 35th annual West Virginia Hunting and Fishing Show last weekend and enjoyed catching up with sportsmen from across the state. All proceeds except for costs to run the show and association operating expenses, are donated to programs that promote or protect hunting, fishing, wildlife, conservation and related educational activities.

Michelle, of Charleston, contacted my office asking for assistance with expediting a 501c3 application. Their organization had the opportunity to apply for grants but without the updated status, they would not be eligible.  As a result of an inquiry from my office, the application was expedited and approved.

USPS CHANGES - The United States Postal Service has announced plans to move mail processing operations from the Charleston Processing & Distribution Facility (P&DC) to Pennsylvania. Residents may attend a public meeting scheduled for January 30th at 2:30 p.m. at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center to voice their concerns and opinions.

HEALTH RESOURCES - According to the latest State of Lung Cancer report, radon was detected at high levels in 28.5% of West Virginia homes. Caused by natural processes in the earth, radon is a radioactive, cancer-causing gas that is undetectable without testing. You can request a free radon test kit by emailing Radon@wv.gov or calling (304) 352-5039. Additional CDC resources are available here.
