Historian Jon Meacham said that perhaps the most important words ever written, originally in English, are these: “All men are created equal.” We are a nation founded upon the principle that all men are created equal in the eyes of their Creator.
The words of the Declaration of Independence changed the entire world. It said that government is not there for the king, the pharaoh, or the feudal lord. The government is there for the people.
A handful of individuals came together and shaped the course of history for America.
I don’t know that we sufficiently appreciate not only the brilliance of the founders, but their courage. They wrote a document based upon principles that were revolutionary, while also partaking in a revolution that put their own lives in jeopardy.
As we look at the challenges we face today, we have to recognize that individual leaders can have an enormous impact. Whether that’s a leader in a home, a church, a school, a company, or in a country, individuals who are given the responsibility of leadership could be shaping society for years to come.
