September 21 - September 25, 2020

This week, the country mourned the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Senator Romney released the following statement: “Justice Ginsburg served our nation with a deep reverence for the law and our Constitution. Her fight for women’s equality inspired all women to pursue their dreams without limits, and her grit, character and sharp wit made her an iconic and inspirational jurist beloved by people young and old. The beautiful friendship she shared with the late Justice Scalia serves as a reminder to all Americans to treat each other with kindness and respect, despite our differences. Justice Ginsburg’s record of distinguished service leaves an indelible mark on our country that will endure for generations to come."

In Washington, Senator Romney continued to warn about the threat of China to our national security while participating in hearings with both the Senate Homeland Security and Foreign Affairs committees. He also pressed federal health officials for a COVID-19 vaccine during a Health Committee hearing. The Senator also met virtually with several groups of Utahns, including Bureau of Land Management Utah Director Dr. Greg Sheehan, mayors from across the state, and representatives from both the direct selling and automobile industries. Keep scrolling for a brief recap of Senator Romney’s week:

Senator Romney released the following statement regarding the current Supreme Court vacancy:

"My decision regarding a Supreme Court nomination is not the result of a subjective test of ‘fairness’ which, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. It is based on the immutable fairness of following the law, which in this case is the Constitution and precedent. The historical precedent of election year nominations is that the Senate generally does not confirm an opposing party’s nominee but does confirm a nominee of its own.

"The Constitution gives the President the power to nominate and the Senate the authority to provide advice and consent on Supreme Court nominees. Accordingly, I intend to follow the Constitution and precedent in considering the President’s nominee. If the nominee reaches the Senate floor, I intend to vote based upon their qualifications."

Keeping airlines flying is essential to economic recovery for all of us. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Salt Lake City airport was booming, experiencing record growth in passengers. Through the CARES Act, Congress provided assistance to counter the devastating toll the pandemic took on our airport and the entire airline industry. However, additional relief is necessary as more than 80,000 pilots, flight attendants, and other airline workers face furloughs amidst the ongoing pandemic.

Senator Romney joined Senators Wicker (R-MS) and Collins (R-ME) to introduce the Air Carrier Worker Support Extension Act of 2020, legislation to extend critical support to ensure that employees continue receiving paychecks and potentially avoid negative operational impacts on SLC Airport. The Senator will also continue to push for a broader COVID-19 relief package which includes provisions to secure federal unemployment benefits, restart the Paycheck Protection Program, help parents with the expenses of childcare and homeschooling, and help our schools keep kids safe.

Clearly China has its eyes on Iran as an entry point into the Middle East. During a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Senator Romney spoke about how critical U.S. efforts to counter China’s expanding influence in the Middle East are to our national and global security.

Following the recent poisoning of opposition leader and anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny in Russia, Senator Romney joined a bipartisan group of colleagues in introducing a targeted bill which would impose sanctions on Russian officials complicit in brazen violations of international law, and require a report on the personal wealth amassed by the corrupt practices of Vladimir Putin and his inner circle. "The attack on Alexei Navalny puts a spotlight on the corruption and lawlessness of the Putin regime,” Senator Romney said. “We must hold the perpetrators accountable for this cowardly attack, which was an attempt to silence dissent and suppress the people’s fight for freedom and democracy."

During a Senate Homeland Security hearing examining current threats to our country, Senator Romney questioned FBI Director Wray about the enormous threat Russia, China, and Iran are to our cyber infrastructure. The Senator also spoke about the need to protect our communities by preventing and stopping Antifa and other anarchist groups from hijacking peaceful protests across our country.
