So far this year, nearly 600 fires in Utah have burned nearly 60,000 acres of land. Outdated policies and poor federal forest management—exacerbated by an historic drought—have led to devastating wildfires in Utah. In June, Senator Romney joined Senator Kelly (D-AZ) and Representative Curtis (R-UT) in introducing the Wildland Fire Mitigation and Management Commission Act of 2021, bipartisan and bicameral legislation to establish a commission of federal and non-federal stakeholders—including city and county level representation—to study and recommend fire prevention, mitigation, management, and rehabilitation policies for forests and grasslands.

This week, the bill was unanimously voted out of committee and now awaits consideration by the full Senate.
