Senator Romney released the following statement after the House blocked a vote on the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which would help Utah expand its roads, mitigate drought conditions, fulfill critical water needs, and prepare for and respond to wildfires. This historic investment is fully paid for and would not increase taxes.
“This week, my colleagues in the House made a purely political decision to block a vote on much-needed, broadly supported legislation to fix America’s crumbling infrastructure. It is unacceptable that a major piece of bipartisan legislation, which is vital to our economy and necessary to keep important transportation programs going, is being held hostage by the most extreme House Democrats for a completely unrelated and still unwritten piece of legislation. What a profound disappointment, and how unfortunate to put politics over what is good for our country.”
Democrats are pushing for a $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill, which would bring nothing but bad news to our country—raising taxes on hardworking Americans to fund a series of expensive measures on their wish-list. Among other things, their bill would provide illegal immigrants with thousands of dollars in new benefits, further encouraging illegal border crossing; push children into government-managed daycare; put U.S. companies at a competitive disadvantage with China; and expedite Medicare’s insolvency.
Senator Romney shared more of his thoughts on the Democrats’ partisan tax and spending spree in a video message below:
Administrative oversight has long been a responsibility of Congress. The withdrawal from Afghanistan was nothing short of a humanitarian and foreign policy disaster, and the Biden Administration must be held accountable. Senator Romney joined his colleagues in introducing the Afghanistan Counterterrorism, Oversight, and Accountability Act, legislation to address the outstanding issues related to the Administration’s rushed and disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan.
The bill includes important measures to ensure that the Administration continues to prioritize the evacuation of American citizens, green card holders, and vulnerable Afghans. It would also impose sanctions on the Taliban and entities supporting it, as well as develop a counterterrorism strategy for Afghanistan in light of the ever-changing situation on the ground.
Utah has one of the highest percentages of its land owned by the federal government—and more than 23 million acres is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). President Biden’s nominee to lead the BLM, Tracy Stone-Manning, has a troubling history of aiding ecoterrorists—and she blatantly tried to conceal it from the Senate. Both of these facts make her unfit to serve. Senator Romney voiced his opposition to Ms. Stone-Manning’s nomination in a speech on the Senate floor.

Marriage is a vital social good, and the foundation of strong families and strong communities. It is misguided and unfair to disincentive couples from marrying. In response to the harmful tax penalties for married couples included in the Democrats’ “human infrastructure” bill, Senator Romney led his colleagues in a letter urging Senate Democratic leadership to remove any proposals that would discourage marriage.

The Democrats' spending bill includes plans for free child care and universal pre-K, both of which will expire in a handful of years. They aren't permanent, unlike the tax increases that would be used to pay for them. It's wrong to let families start planning for and relying on these programs only for them to disappear. That's a bait-and-switch!
During a Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing, Senator Romney challenged Education Secretary Cardona on these proposals. He specifically highlighted how they wouldn’t be permanent. This means families would start to rely on them, only for them to disappear. If these new programs were to be made permanent, he pointed out that there would be only two ways to pay for them: further adding to the national debt or more tax increases on millions of Americans.
Instead of new costly government programs, families should be given the freedom to decide what is best for their children’s early education.
Utah businesses and workers are driving tremendous economic growth across our state. Senator Romney spoke with the South Valley, ChamberWest, St. George, and Davis County chambers of commerce about how the Infrastructure Investments and Jobs Act—bipartisan legislation Senator Romney helped negotiate—would directly support that growth by funding essential initiatives and projects throughout our state.
The United States cannot allow China to threaten the wellbeing of free people and nations. Senator Romney met with the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, to discuss strategies to counter China’s efforts to undermine global order.
Senator Romney met with Scott Pulsipher, President of Western Governors University, to discuss their competency-based education platform and how the WGU model has worked for students amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
