With inflation reaching 8.5% nationally and 10.4% in Utah, many Americans are having a hard time making ends meet. Senator Romney started the week by writing an opinion in the Wall Street Journal that urged President Biden to shift his focus from progressive wish-list projects to serious issues facing Americans, like tackling historic inflation. Later in the week, Senator Romney participated in the opening of Thermo Fisher Scientific's new manufacturing site in Ogden, met with local business owners, and toured Double D Distribution with representatives of the Utah Trucking Association. Three factors have combined to create the perfect economic storm. COVID-19 scrambled the U.S. economy’s supply lines. The Federal Reserve kept its foot on the accelerator way too long. And the Biden Administration has done pretty much everything wrong.

As inflation reached 8.5% nationally, Senator Romney wrote an opinion in the Wall Street Journal urging President Biden to turn his focus towards tackling inflation and getting the U.S. economy back on track.

Our economy depends on the truck drivers who transport freight to keep supply chains moving. Senator Romney sat down for a roundtable discussion with the Utah Trucking Association and toured Double D Distribution in Salt Lake City to better understand the issues facing Utah’s truckers—issues like shipping, labor, inflation, and trucking regulations.

An integral part of Utah’s biotech community, Thermo Fisher Scientific has provided several thousand jobs to Utahns around the state. They also have played a critical role in our country’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic by helping pharmaceutical companies produce therapeutics and vaccines. Senator Romney took part the opening of Thermo Fisher's new manufacturing site in Ogden and later toured the facility.

Utah remains one of the top states for mink production in the country. As the House and Senate head into negotiations on the large package of China bills, Senator Romney joined his colleagues in sending a letter to the Senate negotiators urging them to strike out a provision in the House's version of the bill that would destroy multi-generational family mink farms across the country. American mink, which are highly prized on the world market, are a net export to China, which makes this ban incompatible with legislation intended to strengthen our trade and competitive stance globally.

Despite the real economic challenges facing Utahns, our state remains a great place to do business. Senator Romney met with business owners from South Salt Lake and Utah County to better understand the issues they’re facing, primarily inflation, tariffs, and our burgeoning national debt.

On Earth Day, members of the bipartisan Senate Climate Solutions Caucus successfully found common ground by endorsing climate legislation that would promote nature-based solutions that support our farmers, forests, and oceans; make communities more resilient to disasters and climate impacts; and spur investment in renewables. Senator Romney's MATCH Act, legislation to expedite wildfire recovery while saving taxpayer dollars, was one of the bills endorsed by the Caucus.
