June 12 – June 17, 2022

Despite being the bedrock of society, there’s perhaps never been a more challenging time than today to raise a family. This week, Senator Romney announced the Family Security Act 2.0, a new commitment to hardworking American families that modernizes existing federal policies into a monthly, fully paid for benefit that doesn’t add to the debt or worsen inflation.

The Senator also called out the Administration’s dishonest spending policies with their officials, applauded the signing of a Utah public lands conveyance he helped secure into law, and met with several Utahns visiting Washington. Earlier in the week, Romney joined a bipartisan agreement to help secure communities from senseless gun violence. Keep scrolling for more news.

American families are facing an extraordinary amount of financial strain—worsened by historic inflation. Marriage rates have fallen to all-time lows. Birth rates have dropped 20% since 2007. The modern economy is continuing to leave families further behind.

Senator Romney joined Senators Burr (R-NC) and Daines (R-MT) in announcing the Family Security Act 2.0, which creates a new commitment to hardworking American families by replacing multiple complex federal programs with a monthly cash benefit—making it fully paid for. Because it reforms existing federal programs, this pro-family, pro-life, and pro-marriage plan proves that we can do better to support families without adding to the deficit or creating another new federal program.

Families across the country are scared, and it is Congress’s duty to come together and get something done that will help restore their sense of safety and security in their communities. Senator Romney joined a group of his colleagues in announcing a commonsense, bipartisan proposal to protect America’s children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our country.

Importantly, the plan saves lives while also protecting the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans. It would increase mental health resources, improve school safety and support for students, and help ensure dangerous criminals and those who are adjudicated as mentally ill can’t purchase weapons.

Months ago, the Biden Administration told Congress their resources had run dry and more funding was urgently needed to purchase COVID-19 therapeutics. Yet, somehow, they have now been able to use existing funds to make the purchase. We have runaway inflation, and instead of taking an objective inventory of money they already have, the Administration just asked for more—showing a reckless stewardship over taxpayer money.

During an exchange at a Health Committee hearing, Senator Romney highlighted the Administration’s failure to be transparent with Congress regarding how COVID funding has been spent.

Utah is, and always will be, a public lands state. When Senator Romney came to the Senate, he joined Congressman Curtis in taking up the torch long held by Senator Hatch and Congressmen Bishop and Chaffetz to help get the John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act across the finish line.

This bipartisan lands package—which was decades in the making—transferred more than 6,300 acres from the BLM to the State of Utah for the expansion of Goblin Valley State Park, tripling its size. Senator Romney applauded the signing of these land conveyances in Goblin Valley State Park, which also provide a site for a new Emery County Sheriff’s Office Substation and improves space for historical exhibits at the Buckhorn Information Center.

The transatlantic alliance is crucial to global security and stability. Welcoming important allies like Sweden into NATO will bolster the alliance's strength and readiness for many years to come. Senator Romney met with Swedish Ambassador to the U.S. Karin Olofsdotter to discuss Sweden's application for NATO membership.

The Olympics showcase the greatness of the human spirit. Senator Romney joined Senator Padilla (D-CA), and their colleagues in introducing the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games Commemorative Coin Act, legislation to direct the U.S. Treasury to mint coins in commemoration of the upcoming Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games—without costing the federal government a dollar.

Throughout the week, Senator Romney met with several Utahns in his Washington office, including high school students from San Juan County, Electric Power Systems CEO Nathan Millecam from Logan, UMTRA Project Director Russell McCallister from Moab, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Superintendent Billy Shott from Lake Powell, Utah PTA members, rural Utah government leaders, and high school students from across rural Utah.
