Senator Romney issued the following statement after voting to advance the Respect for Marriage Act, bipartisan legislation that would codify same-sex and interracial marriage nationwide:
“This legislation provides important protections for religious liberty—measures which are particularly important to protect the religious freedoms of our faith-based institutions. I appreciate the efforts of Senators Baldwin, Collins, and others to address this concern, and heartily support their legislation.
“While I believe in traditional marriage, Obergefell is and has been the law of the land upon which LGBTQ individuals have relied. This legislation provides certainty to many LGBTQ Americans, and it signals that Congress—and I—esteem and love all of our fellow Americans equally.”
He also supported a bipartisan amendment to strengthen religious liberty protections in the bill. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints voiced support for this approach.
China poses a great threat to the United States and the international order as it seeks to become the world’s geopolitical, economic, and military superpower. To date, America has reacted to China’s nefarious behavior in an ad hoc, tardy, and largely ineffective manner. China, on the other hand, adheres closely to carefully designed plans.
Senators Romney and Risch (R-ID) urged the Biden Administration to begin the process of implementing Romney’s legislation which was included in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2022. Romney’s amendment requires the United States to develop a grand strategy to address the new era of geostrategic and geoeconomic competition with China.
No matter how effective our defense systems are, we can always strengthen our offense against cyberattacks from adversaries like China to our government entities and businesses. China must recognize that unless they stop their malign actions, there will be damaging consequences.
