January 23 – January 27, 2022

This week, the U.S. Senate convened to begin our work in the new 118th Congress. It remains a special honor to represent Utahns in the Senate, and I’m looking forward to the opportunities ahead to deliver for our great state and country. A divided Congress brings challenges, but it can also bring unique opportunities—and I plan to continue working with my colleagues in good faith to craft and pass meaningful legislation.

More than ever, I’m committed to advancing legislative objectives that I believe are most critical, including balancing the budget and reining in spending; countering the growing threat China poses to the global order; supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression; modernizing policies to better assist families; bolstering our growing state’s infrastructure; and mitigating the effects of Utah’s historic drought, especially concerning the shrinking Great Salt Lake.

These priorities reflect my perspective on serving in the Senate: I didn’t come to Washington just to “fight” and lose, I came to win and deliver real results for Utah and our nation.

History has taught us that when one country begins to feel they can invade another country with little to no response, that violence spreads and we become vulnerable to being pulled into a conflict. Supporting Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion is not just the right thing to do, it’s imperative for U.S. national security and Americans’ economic prosperity.

Following a Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Senator Romney laid out his thoughts on why it’s in our best interests to support Ukraine.

One of the reasons Senator Romney helped negotiate the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act was to ensure that the Biden Administration wouldn't look past the needs of our rapidly growing state. Romney met with elected officials from Wasatch Front Regional Council and Mountainland Association of Governments to discuss the collaborative efforts our cities and towns are taking to make sure new infrastructure projects best support Utahns—no matter where and how they travel along the Wasatch Front.

All human lives are sacred, and the lives of our children—both born and unborn—deserve our protection. Senator Romney joined his colleagues, led by Senator Wicker (R-MS), in reintroducing the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act. This legislation would establish a permanent prohibition on federal funding for abortion, replacing the current restrictions with a single, government-wide standard.

Religious freedom continues to be suppressed by authoritarian regimes around the world, including the Chinese Communist Party. Senator Romney met with U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Rashad Hussain to discuss worldwide developments related to religious freedom, persecution, and discrimination and how we can better protect it at home and abroad.
