This week, as Congress worked to pass legislation that avoided a default on our debt, Senator Romney expressed his support for the bipartisan compromise negotiated by Speaker McCarthy and the White House—highlighting how the bill avoids what could have been an economic disaster while putting government spending on a more sustainable path. He also introduced legislation to expose China’s military investments, voted to overturn Biden’s unfair student loan schemes, and met with several Utah veterans visiting their war memorials in Washington, D.C. Last night, Senator Romney joined a majority of Senators and Utah’s entire House delegation in passing the Fiscal Responsibility Act, a bipartisan compromise negotiated by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the White House to curb government spending and raise the nation’s borrowing limit. Upon the President’s signature, this legislation will avert the federal government from defaulting on its debt, which would have had catastrophic economic consequences here in the U.S. and on a global scale. A default also would have meant the federal government wouldn’t have been able to pay its bills—Social Security checks would have stopped being sent, as would Medicare and Medicaid payments and paychecks for our servicemembers.

Following the announcement of the final deal, Senator Romney released the below statement:

“This deal is good for the country in that it prevents a default and subsequent financial meltdown, while also limiting spending. In addition, House leadership successfully fought for conservative priorities like work requirements for TANF and SNAP, and reduced permitting review timelines. While I would have preferred to see an agreement that also addressed entitlements, this represents a good-faith bipartisan compromise, and I’m hopeful the House and Senate will pass it into law in the coming days.”

The Chinese Communist Party is undertaking a rapid and strategic military buildup in its quest to become the world’s superpower. We cannot for one second trust CCP pronouncements regarding its defense spending—or allow this misleading information to influence U.S. policymaking.

Senator Romney joined Senators Manchin, Sullivan, and King in introducing the China Defense Spending Transparency Act, bipartisan legislation requiring the Defense Intelligence Agency to publish a comprehensive report exposing the true extent of China’s defense-industrial build up. The report will provide policymakers and the American public a clearer understanding of the real value of Chinese military expenditures.

Coming off of Memorial Day weekend, Americans are reminded of the sacrifices made by our servicemembers to protect our freedoms. Senator Romney had the honor of meeting with a group of Utah veterans at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial during their Honor Flight trip and sharing his heartfelt appreciation for their service.

The Biden Administration's student loan schemes are not only fiscally irresponsible, but morally questionable. Hardworking taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to foot the bill for someone else's debt. Senator Romney joined a bipartisan group of his colleagues in overturning the Administration's unfair and misguided policies.

Senator Romney shared the below statement following the announcement by Representative Chris Stewart (R-UT) on his retirement from Congress:

“Congressman Stewart has dutifully served our state and Utahns in the Second Congressional District for more than a decade. A former Air Force pilot, Chris has consistently worked to safeguard the role Utah plays in our country’s national defense. He has been a terrific partner on advancing Utah priorities—advocating for greater local input in public lands management and legislation to protect the Great Salt Lake. Ann and I are praying for Chris, Evie, and the Stewart family.”
