As China continues to ramp up its production of raw materials needed for our industrial base, Senator Romney introduced legislation to bolster our domestic critical minerals capabilities by reducing our dependence on geopolitical adversaries. He also joined the Utah Congressional delegation on legislation to reduce barriers for Utahns to fly into Washington, D.C., called out Bernie Sanders for using his role as Chairman of the Health and Labor Committee for useless political posturing, and supported Utah’s action against a Biden Administration rule that would harm our state’s energy security. China’s rise in power is aided by its monopolization of raw materials and we’re putting our national security and economic vitality at risk by relying on countries like China for critical minerals. Senator Romney, along with Senators Sullivan (R-AK) and Peters (D-MI), introduced the Critical Mineral Independence Act of 2023, legislation to push the Department of Defense to achieve critical mineral supply chain independence from China, Russia, and other geostrategic competitors and adversaries.
Travel to our nation’s capital should be affordable, accessible, and convenient so Utahns are able to easily access the government that represents them. Unfortunately, due to an antiquated perimeter rule imposed on the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), that is not currently the case—particularly for those who live in Western states. The Utah Congressional delegation announced its full support of the Direct Capital Access (DCA) Act, legislation to add 28 additional in-and-beyond-perimeter flights at DCA in the 2023 Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization bill.

Too often, folks come to Washington to introduce partisan bills that have no chance of becoming law, give impassioned speeches, and energize their base. But this does not speak to the seriousness of the times we live in! Members of Congress should be working together—on a bipartisan basis—to meaningfully respond to the challenges we face.
Under the direction of Chairman Bernie Sanders (I-VT), the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee held a markup of leftist labor bills, the Committee’s first partisan markup since 2009. Senator Romney called out Chairman Sanders on this meaningless, partisan effort and called on Congress to move past posturing and toward meaningful solutions that can receive bipartisan support and actually become law.
After the Utah Attorney General filed a lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency’s recently released Ozone Interstate Transport Rule, Senator Romney joined Utah’s elected leaders in issuing the following statement:
“Utah’s measured, all-of-the-above energy policy has powered decades of prosperity by providing some of the country’s most reliable and affordable energy. This balanced and commonsense approach has powered our state, fueled our economy, and maintained a high quality of life for Utahns. We have also dramatically decreased emissions and ozone on our own. However, the Biden administration has turned to executive rulemaking to enact policies that will force early closures of Utah power plants, putting reliable, affordable, and dispatchable power significantly at risk—and only in a few years.
“The Ozone Interstate Transport Rule released by the Environmental Protection Agency harms Utahns and threatens our ability to provide affordable and reliable baseload energy to our state. We will not stand by as the administration encroaches on Utah’s reasonable, responsible, and realistic approach to powering our state.
“As Utah’s elected state leaders, we stand united in pushing back against the administration’s egregious power grab that harms Utahns. We will each fight for a responsible energy policy that embraces efficiency and is based in reality because keeping the lights on is the only option.”
