The free nations of the world are increasingly finding themselves threatened by the rise of authoritarian states—Russia, China, Iran, North Korea. And now, as the people of Israel have been brutally attacked by Hamas, the Iran-backed terrorist regime, Senator Romney has worked tirelessly to affirm the United States’ role in standing with Israel and protecting free democracies around the world. Following a bipartisan trip to Israel this weekend, the Senator cosponsored legislation to condemn Hamas, underscored the need for Israel to eliminate Hamas with the nominee to be U.S. Ambassador to Israel, and met with officials from Tibet on supporting Tibetans’ basic rights amid the CCP’s oppression. The people of Israel have been subjected to unimaginable acts of brutality by Hamas terrorists. Senator Romney joined a bipartisan delegation of senators, led by Senate Majority Leader Schumer (D-NY), on an official visit to Israel this past weekend to affirm that the United States stands wholeheartedly with Israel and supports its right to defend itself.

At a press conference in Israel, Senator Romney highlighted how Hamas uses innocent Palestinian civilians to shield themselves from the Israeli military response in Gaza. He also urged for continued involvement from the United States in countering authoritarian and terrorist regimes—like Iran, Russia, and China—who threaten democracies around the world. Joining Senators Romney and Schumer on the trip were Senators Cassidy (R-LA), Rosen (D-NV), and Kelly (D-AZ).
Israelis have experienced unimaginable horrors at the hands of Hamas terrorists, and the U.S. must work with our friends and allies to ensure that everyone taken hostage is returned to their loved ones. Senator Romney joined his colleagues, led by Senator Rosen (D-NV), in introducing a bipartisan resolution condemning Hamas’s brutal terrorist attacks on Israel and demanding that Hamas release all hostages and allow for their safe return home.

Hamas has made it very clear that as long as they exist, the lives of Israeli civilians will be at risk—not to mention the innocent Palestinian lives that Hamas uses as human shields. During the Foreign Relations Committee hearing on former Treasury Secretary Jack Lew’s nomination for U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Senator Romney asserted that it is absolutely unacceptable for Hamas to continue to exist.
Not only does the Chinese Communist Party carry out gross human rights abuses against the Tibetan people, but it aims to erase Tibetan culture completely. Senator Romney met with Tibetan Administration Sikyong Penpa Tsering and International Campaign for Tibet Chair Richard Gere to discuss legislative efforts to support basic rights in Tibet.

Authoritarianism is on the rise—threatening democracies around the world. Ukraine. Israel. Taiwan. As threats grow, we must link arms with our friends to protect freedom and democracy around the world. Senator Romney joined the Georgetown University Institute of Politics and Public Service community for a wide-ranging discussion on the challenges we face and urged the next generations of leaders to get involved in public service.
Amid the crisis at our southern border, the Biden Administration indicated it would proceed with border wall construction. Now, it’s walking back this common-sense initiative. Senator Romney joined his colleagues, led by Senator Rubio (R-FL), in sending a letter to President Biden encouraging the Administration to resume and expand construction of the border wall.
The Biden Administration's recent land grab proposal will have a negative impact on those who live, work, and recreate in Utah and Wyoming and present further economic and environmental challenges for the greater American West. Senators Romney, Lee, Barrasso (R-WY), and Lummis (R-WY) urged the Bureau of Land Management to immediately withdraw its misguided Rock Springs Draft Resource Management Plan, which will have major repercussions for Utah’s ranchers in the Uintah Basin, who utilize the land for grazing, as well as many of Utah’s communities who rely on natural gas power coming from Wyoming.

Utah communities like Sandy continue to experience economic growth, while facing challenges in housing affordability, wildfires, and transportation. Senator Romney met with Sandy Mayor Monica Zoltanski to discuss their plans for the city, including those funded by the bipartisan infrastructure bill.
Utah’s rich mining legacy has made it a leader in copper and uranium production and has allowed our state to make significant contributions to the national production of silver and coal. However, one consequence of this production—especially from actions taken decades ago—is that thousands of mines throughout Utah have been left abandoned and fallen into disrepair.
Senator Romney joined Senators Heinrich (D-NM) and Risch (R-ID) as a cosponsor of the bipartisan Good Samaritan Remediation of Abandoned Hardrock Mines Act, bipartisan legislation that would make it easier for “Good Samaritans,” such as state agencies, local governments, nonprofits, and other groups, to clean up and improve water quality in and around abandoned hardrock mines.
