Among the many elements that contribute to America’s greatness, there are two that Senator Romney promoted this week both in word and deed—the nation’s ability to lead the free world amid authoritarian aggression, and, related, our economic vitality and stability. He joined thousands in marching along the National Mall to show support for Israel and condemn antisemitism, led a hearing focused on preventing government fraud, and saw growing support for his bipartisan effort to tackle the nation’s mounting public debt. Senator Romney also commemorated the two-year anniversary of bipartisan infrastructure bill becoming law and called on President Biden to urgently implement a comprehensive China strategy. The United States wholeheartedly supports our ally Israel, which has the right to defend its democracy from Iran-backed Hamas terrorists. Senator Romney joined thousands of marchers at the March for Israel rally on the National Mall to condemn antisemitism, call for the release of hostages, and proudly stand with Israel.

Senator Romney released the following statement to commemorate the two-year anniversary of the enactment of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the bipartisan infrastructure bill negotiated by Romney and his colleagues:
“Two years ago today, I was proud to see our bipartisan infrastructure bill signed into law. For decades prior, elected officials had talked about the need to address our nation’s aging infrastructure, yet various challenges and disagreements had resulted in little progress. Our Senate group—five Republicans and five Democrats—worked earnestly to change that. I could not be more proud of what we accomplished: legislation to modernize, replace, and expand physical infrastructure in communities across the country without raising taxes or adding to our national debt.
“Throughout the past two years, I have been able to travel across Utah to meet with state and community leaders to see firsthand how our legislation has helped address local challenges. An agreement was reached to provide running water to the nearly half of Navajo Nation in Utah who had lived without it. The Utah Department of Transportation received funds to modernize and expand critical transportation corridors and public transit systems throughout the state. High-speed internet access was extended to rural and underserved communities. Funding was poured into critical water projects. The list goes on. Utah has unique infrastructure needs due to our increasing population growth and climate, and I look forward to projects throughout our state continuing to receive support from our bipartisan legislation for years to come”
Amid our burgeoning national debt and negative credit outlook, we must take action now to mend America’s unsustainable finances. Support grew this week for the Fiscal Stability Act, bipartisan legislation introduced by Senators Romney and Manchin (D-WV) to strengthen America’s fiscal health and stabilize our nation’s finances for future generations. The Fiscal Stability Act would create a bicameral fiscal commission tasked with finding legislative solutions to stabilize and decrease our national debt, which now exceeds $33.6 trillion—more than double what it was just 10 years ago.
Ahead of President Biden’s meeting with Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit, Senator Romney urged the President to implement his legislation to develop a grand strategy to counter China:
“It has been nearly two years since my legislation requiring the Biden Administration to develop a comprehensive strategy to address the threat of an emerging China was signed into law, yet all that has been outlined are aspirational principles. Principles alone will not address the magnitude and scale of the threat posed by China. The United States is in dire need of a grand strategy which addresses our approach to developing countries, global trade, economic measures, research and development investments, military procurement, and more. The Administration must deliver this strategy—as mandated by law—without delay.
“The Biden Administration must also be clear-eyed in its understanding of China’s nefarious economic intentions and prioritize U.S. national security over dialogues that are unlikely to yield tangible results. Our government cannot continue to chase China with offers of concessions without concrete action from the Chinese Communist Party, especially in instances where they have no interest in making meaningful changes to their own behavior in the first place. Right now, there is a global battle between authoritarianism and democracy, and it is my hope that President Biden will send a clear message to Xi Jinping that China cannot continue its campaign against the U.S. and our allies with impunity.”
More than $200 billion in government pandemic assistance was fraudulently administered, stolen, or wasted—money which could be used to support Americans in need or help Israel and Ukraine. Stealing from the government is stealing from hardworking American taxpayers. Senator Romney led a bipartisan hearing with Senator Hassan (D-NH) examining federal COVID-era spending.

Internships in our nation's capital provide Utah's college students unique opportunities for applied learning experiences. Senator Romney met with a group of BYU Washington Seminar interns for a discussion on faith, public service, and leadership.
