November 27 – December 1, 2023

The United States’ public debt now exceeds $33.6 trillion, more than double what it was just 10 years ago! Without taking action now to tackle the debt, our country may find itself in a fiscal crisis akin to those of countries like Greece and Italy years ago. This week, Senator Romney continued to push forward his bipartisan Fiscal Stability Act, which aims to repair America’s broken finances, by testifying at the House Budget Committee hearing on the need for a fiscal commission. He also applauded Utah for all but securing the 2034 Winter Olympic Games, welcomed a federal wildfire funding announcement for our state, and met with Utahns visiting Washington. Our mounting public debt is putting our nation in a hazardous situation, and unless we fix it soon, America will not be able to continue leading the world. Senators Romney and Manchin (D-WV) testified at the House Budget Committee’s hearing examining the need for a fiscal commission to discuss their Fiscal Stability Act, a bipartisan solution to strengthen America’s fiscal health and stabilize our nation’s finances for future generations. Importantly, the legislation applies lessons learned from the past to ensure this commission can successfully craft measures to stabilize our public debt. It also provides a pathway for those measures to be voted on by both the House and the Senate without delay.

Utahns, and residents of the American West, understand the reality that decades of severe drought and poor forest management practices have caused wildfires to become more numerous and destructive. Reducing the fuel load of our forests—through controlled burns, the remediation of deadwood, and the like—is among the lowest hanging fruit for advancing wildfire resilience. Senator Romney applauded an announcement from the Department of Interior that more than $10 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, negotiated by Senator Romney and his colleagues, would be invested in Utah to advance wildfire resilience work and support fuels management projects on 43,240 acres of land across the state.
