China is on track to replace the United States as the economic, military, and geopolitical leader of the world. They've monopolized industries and infiltrated various countries’ governments. At a Foreign Relations Committee hearing, the nominee to serve as Deputy Secretary of State committed to personally delivering a comprehensive China strategy to Senator Romney—legislation he secured into law as a part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2022. In addition to requiring the President to develop and submit the strategy to Congress, the law authorizes him to convene an advisory board of outside experts from the private sector, academia, and think tanks to analyze, challenge, and make recommendations for the strategy.
I-15 is a locally, regionally, and nationally significant freight corridor that provides a critical link between the ports in California and the inland West. The highway runs through Iron County, Utah, which is expected to grow by 40% over the next few decades.
Senator Romney applauded an announcement from the Department of Transportation that more than $70 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, negotiated by the Senator and his colleagues, would be awarded to the Utah Department of Transportation for the I-15 South Iron County Freight, Mobility, and Safety Project. This project will add a northbound climbing lane on I-15 and replace an interchange in Cedar City, which will benefit the public by increasing safety, reducing congestion, and saving costs.
The October 7 attacks on Israel perpetrated by Hamas have made it more urgent and necessary for the U.S. to counter the role that cryptocurrency plays in the financing of terrorism. Senators Romney, Warner (D-VA), Rounds (R-SD), and Reed (D-RI) introduced the Terrorism Financing Prevention Act, bipartisan legislation to crack down on terrorist organizations—like Hamas—by applying sanctions to foreign parties that facilitate financial transactions with terrorists.
Senator Romney shared the following statement after Maj. Eric V. Spendlove, an Air Force flight surgeon from St. George, Utah, was announced as one of the servicemembers killed in a military aircraft accident near Japan:
“Our nation is indebted to Air Force Maj. Eric V. Spendlove, from St. George, for his bravery and sacrifice. A residency trained flight surgeon and medical operations flight commander, Maj. Spendlove served our country with distinction and honor. Ann and I pray for his loved ones mourning this tremendous loss.”
Despite a precipitous winter, the declining Great Salt Lake still poses threats to our wellbeing in Utah and in our neighboring states. Senator Romney welcomed Utah’s Great Salt Lake Commissioner Brian Steed to the Capitol to host a discussion about water conservation with senators from states on the Colorado River. Steed shared his water expertise with the group, which is working to craft meaningful water solutions, and spoke about the parallels between the Colorado River and Great Salt Lake.
Energy production in the Uinta Basin is on the rise, posing exciting economic opportunities for Utahns in the region. Senator Romney met with members of the Utah Petroleum Association to discuss efforts to better support the industry in our state.
