Illicit vaping products, designed to target young people with flavors such as blue cotton candy and pink lemonade, have gotten more and more of our youth addicted to nicotine. This week, Senator Romney continued efforts to tackle the youth vaping crisis by introducing bipartisan legislation to crack down on illicit vaping products, most of which come from China. He also called for an immediate and permanent halt of U.S. funding to UNRWA following reports that members of its staff participated in the Hamas terror attacks on Israel on October 7. Illicit vaping products—over 90% of which come from China—have flooded the United States vaping market. Most concerning is that these Chinese products target young people and are designed to deliver stronger nicotine levels at a higher volume. Senator Romney joined his colleagues, led by Senator Shaheen (D-NH), in reintroducing bipartisan legislation to protect children from the dangers of e-cigarettes. The Resources to Prevent Youth Vaping Act would require e-cigarette manufacturers to pay user fees to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to help conduct stronger oversight of the e-cigarette industry and increase awareness of the danger of e-cigarettes.

Recent reports revealed that 12 United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) staff were directly involved in the Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023. This was not just a few bad apples acting out of turn—it is emblematic of an organization where no measures will ever be enough to cure the rot that is so clearly endemic to its mission. Senator Romney joined a group of Republican colleagues, led by Senators Ricketts (R-NE), Scott (R-SC), and Risch (R-ID), in sending a letter to Majority Leader Schumer (D-NY) and Minority Leader McConnell (R-KY) demanding that the national security supplemental bill include an immediate and permanent prohibition of U.S. aid to UNRWA.

Utahns know that you’re never too young to get involved in strengthening your community. Senator Romney met with youth coalitions from Kane, Garfield, Weber, and Salt Lake Counties to hear about their plans to promote mental health and prevent substance abuse in their towns and cities.
