Capitol Hill was abuzz this week as groups from all over the country flew in for their spring “fly-ins” to meet with their senators and representatives. Senator Romney met with many local leaders from cities and towns throughout Utah who were in Washington to advocate for their priorities that can be addressed at the federal level. The President also released his proposed budget—an unserious proposal filled with gimmicks—which Senator Romney chastised at a Budget Committee hearing. Senator Romney also led a committee hearing focused on modernizing wildfire policies based off of the recommendations of his Wildland Fire Commission. Keep scrolling for more news:

From Maui, to Utah, and up to Canada—we have continued to see wildfires devastate communities. Utah alone sees 800-1,000 wildfires each year. Senator Romney led a Homeland Security Committee hearing about modernizing federal wildfire policies, with an emphasis on the final report from the Wildland Fire Mitigation and Management Commission. Utah’s Director of Forestry, Fire and State Lands Jamie Barnes served as a witness in the hearing.

The Commission, originally created by Senators Romney and Kelly (D-AZ), along with Representative Curtis (R-UT), was enacted as part of the bipartisan infrastructure bill. Senators Romney and Kelly are working on turning the recommendations of the Commission into legislation that will modernize federal policies to help prevent wildfires from becoming catastrophic disasters.

The Administration continues to put out unserious budget proposals it knows have no chance whatsoever of garnering bipartisan support—which means they will never become law. Despite using budget gimmicks to obscure its true cost, President Biden’s proposed budget would still add more than $16 trillion to the national debt by 2034. During a Budget Committee hearing examining the President’s proposed budget, Senator Romney decried the unserious nature of the Budget Committee in its lack of focus on fiscal issues and urged both parties to work together to get our fiscal house in order before we reach the crisis point.

Three words—”Invest, Align, Compete”—do not make an effective strategy to counter the threat of China. During a Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Senator Romney chided the Biden Administration on its failure to deliver to Congress a comprehensive strategy to counter the China threat, which was required by law to be provided by June 2023—almost one year ago. He urged them to get it done without further delay.

Utah has 15 banks that operate with active industrial bank charters, and these banks support more than 6,000 jobs and produce more than $700 million in state GDP every year. Senator Romney led a bipartisan group of 12 senators in urging the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to fairly consider applications for deposit insurance made by industrial loan companies and avoid needless bureaucratic delays in processing ILC applications.
