Dear Fellow Vermonter,
Let's be clear. We live in a country with a broken health care system. Health care in our country is too expensive, too inaccessible, and the process is too bureaucratic. Tragically, there are millions of Americans in need of health care, dental care, mental health counseling, and affordable prescription drugs who cannot access those basic human needs.
While the struggle continues to guarantee health care to all people as a human right, I am proud that in Vermont we have made significant progress in improving access to primary health care. Over the last several decades, we have seen a major increase in the number of Federally Qualified Community Health Centers in our state and the number of Vermonters who use them. In fact, Vermont leads the nation in per capita utilization of Community Health Centers with more than 170,000 Vermonters, almost one-third of our population, now visiting one of the 66 locations across the state.
We caught up with Michael Costa who heads up Northern Counties Health Care to learn more.
