Dear Fellow Vermonter,
Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to visit town fairs in every part of Vermont, each with its own history, personality, and tradition. And I have a lot of memories from them all. Like many other Vermonters, my kids, grandchildren, and I have enjoyed the rides, the food, the agricultural exhibits, the historical displays, the demolition derbies, the tractor pulls, the beer tents, the concerts, and many other activities.
There is something special, however, about the Caledonia County Fair which this year celebrated its 176th anniversary. In a rural state like Vermont, the Caledonia County Fair is very rural.
The world has changed just a bit from the 1840s when that fair began. But one thing has remained constant. The fair is a time and place where people in the community come together, mark the passing of another season, and have a good time.
This season was particularly special for the Caledonia County Fair as it honored the dedicated service of longtime president Dick Lawrence, who is retiring after leading the fair for nearly 40 years.
On the last day this summer, the Bernie Buzz went out to speak with Dick Lawrence and his team to hear more about the history of the fair and the local community it serves. I hope you will watch the video below and hear what they had to say.
