Come Out and Support Our Local Firefighters

THIS SATURDAY, May 13, 9am-1pm

Dear Fellow Vermonter,

There is a major crisis that we are facing in our communities – something which does not get enough attention: It is getting more and more difficult to fully staff our fire departments. The truth is the vast majority of fire departments in Vermont and across the country are made up of volunteers.

Simply put, firefighters, both career and volunteer, are brave and dedicated members of our communities who often make the difference between life and death. Yet too many of our firehouses are understaffed and lack the resources they need to provide this essential service. This is a dangerous situation which, together, we must remedy.

Now, I am working hard to address this crisis. But you and I know that, as Vermonters, we cannot simply wait for change to come from Washington. We must come together and stand up for one another. That is why I am glad to hear about a statewide effort called Operation Mayday. I hope you’ll take a moment to watch the video here and below to learn more.

This Saturday, May 13, between 9:00am and 1:00pm fire departments across Vermont will be opening their doors to the public to highlight ways people can get involved. Please consider stopping by your local department this weekend to learn more and to help support your community's firefighters. For more information, visit: https://firesafety.vermont.gov/mayday

If you’re interested in getting involved with your local fire department, but can’t make it out this weekend, please call 802-483-2755 or visit your local fire department directly to learn more. If you know a young person who might be interested in getting involved, you can learn more about the statewide Cadet Academy held at the Vermont Fire Academy, here: https://firesafety.vermont.gov/academy

To all Vermont firefighters and everyone coming out to support them: Thank you.

Sincerely,
