Dear Fellow Vermonter,
Last year, my office organized the first-ever “Youth Chess Day.” I was amazed by the response we received from students, parents, and community members alike. More than 130 young Vermonters from every county across our state came out to learn and play one of the oldest games in human history.
At last year’s “Youth Chess Day,” I saw elementary and middle school students trying out the game for the first time during our morning Learn to Play Session. In the afternoon, more experienced players tested their skills in a tournament.
Now you may be wondering: “Why organize a chess day for young Vermonters?” To my mind, the answer is simple. Chess provides an opportunity for young people to improve their intellectual skills, their ability to strategize, think ahead, and focus. Further, playing chess is a lot of fun and a way to make new friends.
