Dear Fellow Vermonter,

For nearly 100 years, young people from all over the country, and more recently the world, have come together to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

In the lead up to the national competition, students in grades 1 through 8 participate in local, qualifying bees. This year, 60 students from 27 schools took part in Vermont’s statewide contest.

It takes a lot of courage to stand up in front of an audience and take part in a spelling bee competition. Congratulations to all the students for all their hard work; and a special congratulations to Rutland’s own Phoenix Newell, who took home first place. The Bernie Buzz was able to catch up with Phoenix and her fellow spellers at Vermont’s statewide competition. Watch the video below to hear what they had to say.

This week, Phoenix heads to Washington D.C. to represent Vermont in the Scripps National Spelling Bee – which will kick off this Tuesday, May 28. I hope you will join me in cheering her on and wishing her the best of luck!

Sincerely,
