Dear Fellow Vermonter,
Memorial Day is not simply a day for picnics, parades, and ballgames. It is a time to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives to defend our nation. It is also a time to stand together with the families and loved ones who live with that unimaginable loss.
As Vermonters and Americans, we owe a debt of gratitude to the service members who lost their lives in defense of our country, one that can never be repaid. But what we can do, and what we must do, is keep our nation’s promise to those families and to the service members who do return home – many wounded in body and in spirit.
As a senior member of the Senate Veterans Committee, that’s what I will continue to do. Congress must make certain that Gold Star families and all veterans get the care and benefits they deserve without delay.
And, on this Memorial Day, we must recommit ourselves to doing everything possible to end the scourge of war and create a world of peace.
