Dear Fellow Vermonter,
Each day, when the school bell rings, students emerge from their classrooms and head to the fields, courts, hills and tracks that are home to hundreds of sports teams across our state.
Whether a student loves playing basketball or soccer, running track or skiing, our sports teams teach commitment, dedication, trust, friendship, problem solving and hard work. All of this is possible because of a dedicated group of adults – some teachers and some community members – who coach these young athletes.
As a high school basketball player and track athlete – and even more as a parent and grandparent – I know how meaningful it can be to have a good coach and role model. Coaches bring our young athletes together, motivate them to get engaged and teach them to have confidence in themselves and their fellow teammates. We have them to thank for Vermont’s many great athletes and their role in inspiring the next generation.
Andrew Tripp of U-32 High School in East Montpelier has just wrapped up his 37th year of coaching earlier this month. Andrew has worked with hundreds of cross-country runners, Nordic skiers, and track athletes to become better, stronger, and faster. But he has also coached them to become people who know how to work together. The Bernie Buzz sat down with Andrew to hear how he got involved in coaching, his love for working with our young Vermonters and why he keeps coming back, season after season.
