Hearing from Students about the Issues Facing Vermont and Our Country

Dear Fellow Vermonter,

I always enjoy getting out and talking to the great young people in our state.

On Friday, I visited Mount Mansfield Union (MMU) High School in Jericho to talk with students and hear their thoughts on some of the very important issues facing our state and our country.

The good news is that these young people are smart, engaged and thoughtful about the world. From artificial intelligence to tax policy, to education and health care, they are paying attention and thinking about how these issues impact their lives.

In the question and answer period, one student raised a very important and timely issue that his grandmother worries a lot about. And that is: How do we address the high property tax burden here in Vermont? His question was met with loud applause from nearly every student in the room, and led to a discussion about the need for a more progressive tax system and to build more affordable housing. The students expressed concerns that, unless we change things, they will never be able to afford their own home.

Another student asked a very insightful question about how, in a very politically divided nation, we can do a better job understanding people with whom we disagree. We talked about how, by finding common ground, we can create connections and build community. This led to further conversations about education, health care and climate change. Throughout the discussion, the students shared a real understanding that we all do better when we take care of each other and look out for one another.

People may sometimes grumble about “kids today,” but from what I saw at MMU, there is a lot we should be very proud of. But, let’s be clear: Our kids are growing up in a very difficult and fast changing world. As adults, we must do everything possible to help ensure they have the bright futures they deserve.

Sincerely,
