The Famed Harris Hill Ski Jump

Dear Fellow Vermonter,

Congratulations to the Brattleboro community for hosting the annual Harris Hill Ski Jump competition which brings together some of the world’s most promising junior ski jumpers. Yes. This was the 104th year of this great competition.

The Bernie Buzz team had a great time covering the event. The weather was perfect at 30 degrees and sunny. Bright and early, thousands of Vermonters and out-of-town visitors alike packed into the parking lot to find a prime tailgating spot. Ski jumpers prepared their gear and took practice runs on the towering 90-meter Olympic-sized jump.

On this weekend, skiers were competing to qualify for the Junior World Ski Jumping Championship that will be held in Norway this March. Competitors came from just down the road in Brattleboro, across the border in nearby Lake Placid, as well as from much further away in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and even Europe.

One of the things that makes this event so special is that just as it draws competitors and fans from around the world, it is truly a hometown experience. The competition is run by dedicated local volunteers, who come back year after year to make the competition a success. And many of the spectators are local too, many of whom have been attending for their entire lives — some from families who have been coming to this event for generations. We hope you’ll enjoy catching a glimpse of this great competition and hearing what some of the enthusiastic fans had to say about this great event.

At the end of an exciting day, Lake Placid high schooler Henry Loher earned a first-place finish after slightly besting the previous year’s winner. Please join me in congratulating all of those who competed in this year's competition, as well as the volunteers, organizers and coaches who work so hard to make this Harris Hill Ski Jump a success year after year.

Sincerely,
