Sen. Rick Scott Calls for Quick Response from States on Coronavirus Response Spending
Senator Rick Scott released the following statement after a majority of U.S. Governors refused to send timely information on how their states have allocated the trillions of dollars in taxpayer funding from the CARES Act and other federal coronavirus response measures. Last month, Senators Scott, Ron Johnson and Ted Cruz sent a letter to U.S. Governors requesting details on how this taxpayer money is being spent. So far, fewer than 10 states have responded.
Senator Rick Scott said, “State and local governments across our nation have received more than $1 trillion in taxpayer money to address the coronavirus pandemic. The public deserves information on exactly how this money is being allocated, which is why my colleagues and I requested details from each U.S. Governor. I thank those states that have been forthcoming with this information, but am very disappointed in the lack of response and transparency from the majority of states. The more information we have, the better off we are, especially in a crisis. I’m calling on every Governor to work with us to protect taxpayer dollars, and respond as quickly as possible." Senator Rick Scott spoke on the Senate floor about the fiscal year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which includes his Secure U.S. Bases Act to reform and improve foreign military student training programs following the terrorist attack at Naval Air Station Pensacola on December 6th, 2019. Senator Scott is also working to protect Florida’s Gulf Coast from offshore drilling with his amendments to extend the current moratorium for 10 years and require the Department of Defense to report on the importance of the Gulf Test Range, which is currently used for vital military testing and training and is critical to our national security.
