Title 42 Expiration Increases Chaos at Southern Border

Title 42 authorities expired last week, and the Biden Administration’s failure to prepare is set to make an already dire situation on our southern border worse.

President Biden recently told reporters that the situation at our border is “going to be chaotic for awhile.” The truth is that the situation at our border has been chaotic since the Biden Administration began.

From stopping construction of the border wall to halting deportations to suspending the Remain in Mexico policy, the Biden Administration has consistently failed to prioritize the security of our border. There have been at least 6.4 million illegal border crossings since President Biden took office. To put that in perspective, the population of Indiana is 6.8 million.

The coming surge of illegal border crossings because of Title 42 expiring will exacerbate a crisis of this Administration’s making. Even fellow Democrats say so. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, says the Biden Administration doesn’t have an “adequate response” to the coming catastrophe.

The American people knew this day was coming, but the Biden Administration has done little to prepare. Now we are told it will be “chaotic for awhile.” In other words, more of the same.

I will continue to press the Administration to reverse course and do more to secure our border. I joined my Senate colleagues in sending a letter to the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas criticizing his failure to secure the border, despite receiving congressionally appropriated funds to build the border wall.

U.S. Highway 20 Declared the “National Medal of Honor” Highway

Image

Indiana is home to 156 miles of U.S. Highway 20, and I joined my Senate colleagues in introducing legislation to designate it as the "National Medal of Honor Highway." Medal of Honor recipients are some of our bravest heroes and re-designating the longest continuous highway in the United States would permanently recognize and celebrate the devotion and sacrifices these recipients have given to our country.

Support Grows for PASTEUR Act

Image

I recently reintroduced the PASTEUR Act to encourage innovative drug development targeting the most threatening infections, improve the appropriate use of antibiotics, and ensure domestic availability of antibiotics when needed.

Antimicrobial resistance has become a growing crisis in recent years. Market failures have resulted in a lack of needed research and development in this field which is a threat to public health. Our bill would incentivize the development of new innovative antibiotics and focus on educating health care providers on how to avoid overuse or misuse of these life-saving medications in order to slow the emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens.

Following the bill’s reintroduction, patients, medical care providers, and health care associations in Indiana and across the country have voiced their support. Read more here.
