Honoring Hoosier Alice Sanger on Flag Day

Last week, on Flag Day, I spoke on the Senate floor today about the legacy of Hoosier Alice Sanger. This Indiana native was the first woman to serve on a president’s staff and helped establish the celebration of Flag Day.

Our flag represents the promise of freedom and self-government, that any man or woman can live their life in pursuit of happiness. But it is also a reminder that the work of honoring those ideals goes on. It is fitting then that, on Flag Day, we remember Indiana’s Alice Sanger. This Hoosier served her country so faithfully in an era where pathways for women to do so were few.

Hosting Deans from Leading Business Schools for Roundtable Conversation

Image

Last week, Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA-17) and I hosted a first-of-its-kind roundtable conversation with the deans of leading business schools from around the country. The conversation revolved around some of the most pressing issues at the forefront of business and governance, including the future of artificial intelligence, global health innovation, and sustainability practices.

Roundtable participants included the deans of leading U.S. business schoolsincluding Dr. Ash Soni from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business.

Since World War II, the United States has led the global economy and pushed the frontier of technological innovation. Business school deans and members of Congress gathered to discuss strategies to keep American businesses globally competitive and dynamic and to educate the next generation of diverse leaders to prioritize investing in America and our workforce. The group discussed how to best tackle these challenges in a way that aligns with the nation’s core values. Business schools will help build the future economy and mold the next generation of business leaders, so it's important for deans be a part of these conversations in Congress.

I am committed to ensuring America is a global leader in innovation and technology. A major part of that leadership is the ability to collaborate across the public and private sectors, which is why this event was important.

Time to Fight China’s Economic Coercion

Some foreign adversaries like China and Russia think they can drive a wedge between our allies and partners by using economic intimidation or bullying. These threats and grabs for power cannot go unchecked.

I’ve introduced the Countering Economic Coercion Act with Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) to help our foreign partners on an expedited basis when they are targeted for standing up to authoritarian regimes. By supporting our partners under threat, we protect America’s own national security interests.

Last week, Senator Coons and I published this op-ed about our bill. Read more here.

CADETS Act Heads to President’s Desk

Our maritime academies play an important but often overlooked role in our national security. My bipartisan CADETS Act will expand the Maritime Administration’s Student Incentive Payment Program’s age eligibility for maritime cadets to offset their tuition, living costs, and uniforms through the Student Incentive Payment Program as they serve our country.

My bill has passed the House and Senate, and it is now headed to the President to be signed into law. Learn more about the CADETS Act here.
