As the Back to School season approaches, I want to make you aware of a state program for veterans with school-aged children. “Operation Back to School” is a Military Family Relief Fund program organized by the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs. This program is designed to help veterans and their families who are experiencing financial hardship by providing assistance with essential school expenses for dependent children living with a veteran. Families are able to receive $500 for each dependent child residing in the veteran’s home. The application is due by 4 p.m. on August 31, 2023. More information about the program and qualifications is available here. My office is able to assist in obtaining a DD214 (or other military service records), if you do not have one. Feel free to reach out by calling 812-542-4820 or by filling out this form.
I helped kick off Indiana Black Expo’s (IBE) Summer Celebration on Friday, as IBE honored individuals who have made significant contributions to the Black community. Read more about this event here.
Last week, the Senate passed a resolution Senator Mike Braun (R-Ind.) and I introduced congratulating the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team on winning the 2023 NCAA national title.
The national championship is Notre Dame’s first in men’s lacrosse and 34th overall in team sports.
I joined with Senators Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) to introduce the Building Chips in America Act. Our bipartisan bill will maximize the opportunity to bring microchip manufacturing back to America while maintaining environmental protections for clean air and water. Following the passage of the CHIPS and Science Act, companies throughout the semiconductor supply chain have announced plans to invest hundreds of billions in new domestic manufacturing projects. The Building Chips in America Act would ensure federal environmental reviews are completed in a timely manner for these microchip projects supported by the CHIPS and Science Act by streamlining approval for projects currently under construction and others that could be delayed, and by providing the Secretary of Commerce greater tools to more effectively and efficiently carry out reviews. Read more about the bill here.
Last week, I received an update from the superintendents of Northwest Allen County Schools, Tippecanoe School Corporation, Noblesville Schools and Porter Township School Corporation on issues facing Hoosier students, educators, and schools.
