Housing Discussion in South Bend

Image

Last week, I hosted a roundtable in South Bend to discuss three bills I have introduced to help increase safe, affordable housing options for Hoosier families.

The Yes In My Backyard Act would eliminate barriers to much-needed housing by requiring transparency in zoning, local land use, and housing decisions. Discriminatory zoning and land use policies have driven up housing costs in communities across America, and my legislation will encourage towns and cities to adopt more inclusive regulations.

The Neighborhood Homes Investment Act would revitalize distressed neighborhoods by creating a tax credit for building and renovating homes in blighted areas. This legislation would address the high costs of purchasing and improving homes and ensure that these homes remain affordable for members of the community.

The Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act would improve and expand the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, our nation’s most successful affordable housing program. This legislation would provide an additional 44,500 units in Indiana alone over the next ten years.

I recently visited Sweetwater Sound in Fort Wayne for a fireside chat with local leaders from across Northeast Indiana. I provided updates on my legislation to improve housing affordability and the opportunities that could be brought to the region thanks to the CHIPS and Science Act

I appreciated the opportunity to hear directly from Hoosiers in this region. Read more here.

We Need Answers After Biden Administration Releases $6 Billion to Iran

I joined with a group of Republican colleagues in sending a letter to the Biden Administration demanding answers regarding the approximately $6 billion the Administration released to Iran in exchange for American prisoners. Iran is the world’s largest state sponsor of terror, and this payment strengthens Iran’s efforts at hostage diplomacy.

In our letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen, we wrote, “When the Obama administration released $400 million in liquidated assets to Iran in 2016, we warned that this dangerous precedent would put a price on American lives. Seven years later, the current administration is providing a ransom payment worth at least fifteen times that amount to the world’s largest state sponsor of terror, in yet another violation of the United States’ long-standing ‘no concessions’ policy. In the release of Executive Order 14078 on July 19, 2022, the White House admitted that ‘terrorist organizations, criminal groups, and other malicious actors who take hostages for financial, political, or other gain—as well as foreign states that engage in the practice of wrongful detention, including for political leverage or to seek concessions from the United States—threaten the integrity of the international political system and the safety of United States nationals and other persons abroad.’ The release of such a significant sum to the Iranian regime runs entirely counter to that claim and will only serve to encourage additional hostage taking for financial or political gain.”

Academy Day Update

Image

It was great to meet with young Hoosiers who attended my Academy Day event in Indianapolis last week. I am encouraged by all the young leaders who are eager to serve our country and learn more about the U.S. service academies.

The next Academy Day will be virtual and held on Monday, September 18. This will be an opportunity to learn more about the admissions process and what life is like at the United States Military Academy, the United States Naval Academy, the United States Air Force Academy, and the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Representatives from each academy will be on hand to answer questions.
