Crane is Vital to Our National Security

Image

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) in southern Indiana is playing a vital role in America’s national security and economic security. Last week, I received briefings from top leaders at the base about their mission critical work and their management of the CHIPS and Science Act’s Microelectronics (ME) Commons Hub program. As we work to grow the nation’s microelectronics base, Indiana will continue to play a key role in the development of critical national security technologies and capabilities.

Ensuring U.S. Leadership in AI Innovation

Last week, I led a letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee urging support for the establishment of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (USAISI) in the Fiscal Year 2024 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill, or any other relevant funding opportunities. I was joined by Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) in sending the letter.

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced the creation of USAISI last November as part of efforts to ensure our nation’s global leadership in setting standards for AI innovation and use. NIST would use the funding to enhance the USAISI team with experts, support the formation of a Joint Research Center for advancing AI system evaluation techniques and safety research, and support the USAISI Consortium that will play a crucial role in integrating these advancements into industry and society.

Our letter notes the rapid advancement of AI innovation has brought immense possibilities and opportunities, as well as potential challenges and risks that must be addressed in a safe manner. Click here to read the full letter.
