The IRS Needs to Improve Service for Hoosiers

Earlier this week, I questioned Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Daniel Werfel on the difficulties Hoosiers have faced with obtaining assistance from the IRS.

My office consistently receives feedback from Hoosier taxpayers about inefficiencies and customer service issues with the IRS. Common complaints include an inability to reach IRS employees, inadequate assistance, and significant processing delays. Historically, the IRS has used funding as an excuse for these issues. The IRS should use the billions of dollars in extra funding it received to address these customer service issues, modernize, and better serve taxpayers.

SK hynix Makes History in Indiana

Recently, SK hynix – the world’s leading producer of high-bandwidth memory chips – made the largest economic development announcement in Indiana’s history, totaling nearly $4 billion. Its upcoming facility in West Lafayette will be the first of its kind in the United States and will bring more than 1,000 new jobs.

The CHIPS and Science Act, which I led, has helped bring investments like this one to Indiana. The SK hynix investment is a signal to the world that Indiana and the U.S. are open for business when it comes to the semiconductor ecosystem. Renew the Trade Partnership Between U.S.
and Sub-Saharan African Countries

I recently introduced the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Renewal and Improvement Act of 2024 to renew and strengthen a key trade program with sub-Saharan African countries. AGOA is a trade preference program that facilitates deeper investment and stronger commercial ties with these countries.

AGOA was first enacted in 2000 and the AGOA Renewal and Improvement Act would extend it until 2041. This extension would offer businesses the certainty they need to increase investment in sub-Saharan Africa at a time when many firms are looking to diversify supply chains away from China. Sub-Saharan Africa is home to the world’s youngest population and many fast-growing economies, and AGOA has played a critical role in advancing economic development and strengthening U.S. economic engagement in the region.

Meeting with Indiana Pork Producers

Image

Indiana is the fifth-largest pork-producing state in the nation and over 14,000 Hoosiers are employed in the industry. I appreciated meeting with members of Indiana Pork Producers Association and hearing about the issues important to them.
