80th Anniversary of D-Day

Image

In the early morning hours of June 6, 1944, 31,000 members of the United States Armed Forces, and 153,000 of their counterparts in the Allied Expeditionary Force, launched Operation Overlord by storming ashore five landing areas on the beaches of Normandy, France. The first day of the operation, which became known as D-Day, saw approximately 10,000 Allied soldiers wounded or killed, including 6,000 Americans. Operation Overlord led to Allied liberation of Western Europe from the control of Nazi Germany and an end to World War II.

In advance of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution, which I helped introduce, commemorating this historic operation and expressing gratitude and appreciation to the U.S. Armed Forces and Allied troops responsible for helping secure victory in Europe.

The Greatest Generation changed the tide of World War II, and we remember these brave Americans and honor their selfless service and relentless dedication to freedom.

Executive Order on Border is Too Little, Too Late

This week, President Biden issued an executive order on immigration policy in an effort to turn away migrants seeking asylum who cross the U.S. southern border illegally.

For over three years, I have urged the Biden Administration to reverse course on its approach to our border. This executive order is an admission that President Biden’s approach to our border has failed. The Administration’s open border policies have created a national security and humanitarian crisis on the U.S. southern border. In his first 100 days in office, President Biden signed 94 executive orders to dismantle his predecessor’s border policies for the simple reason that those policies actually reduced illegal immigration.

Record levels of illegal crossings are a national security issue, but also a crime and drug issue in Indiana and across the country. This is too little, too late.

Indiana's Burmese American Community

I had a great meeting with Elaisa Vahnie, a leading voice for Indiana's Burmese American community, to discuss U.S. policy towards the conflict in Burma. Indiana is home to the largest population of Burmese Americans in the United States.
