Over 95% of international internet traffic relies on undersea cables, facilitating trillions in daily financial transactions. Additionally, energy transmission cables are proliferating as governments look to new sources of electricity generation. As American companies invest in this critical infrastructure, understanding vulnerabilities impacting economic and national security is essential.
I led a letter pushing President Biden to address concerns about the security of these undersea cables, which are crucial for American workers and businesses. America’s adversaries are currently enhancing their capabilities to disrupt this infrastructure.
It is imperative that the United States undertake a review of existing vulnerabilities to global undersea cable infrastructure, including the threat of sabotage by Russia as well as the growing role of China in cable laying and repair. If we are truly to deepen vital commercial and security relationships with willing partners and allies, this must be a national priority.
