China Suspends Adoptions, Upending Hoosier Families

I joined with over 100 members of Congress to urge President Biden to stand up for American families whose lives have been upended by the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) decision to end the vast majority of intercountry adoptions. The PRC announced that as of August 28, 2024, foreign adoptions from the country will no longer proceed. 

Approximately 300 children in the PRC – some with various health conditions – are already paired with families in the United States, including a number of Hoosier families. It is in the best interest of these children and families to urge the PRC to fulfill and uphold the commitment the government has made.

 Ambassador Garcetti Visits Indiana

Last week, Governor Eric Holcomb and I hosted Eric Garcetti, the U.S. Ambassador to India, and Indian-American Hoosiers to talk about the critical relationship between the U.S. and India. 

America’s relationship with India is among our most important in the world, as we look to promote peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. Indian companies are making substantial investments in our state, and India is a valuable trade partner for Hoosier businesses.

We also visited Purdue University, where President Mung Chiang announced additional partnerships with institutions in India to offer joint degrees in high-demand areas like AI and semiconductors.

I visited Major Tool and Machine in Indianapolis recently and talked with members of the Indiana Manufacturing Association about strengthening our manufacturing base. Manufacturing is – and will continue to be – central to a thriving Indiana economy.


 Federal Agency Gets Close Look at Indiana's Life Sciences Industry

Dr. Renee Wegrzyn, the director of Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), and her team recently visited Indiana to learn about our life sciences industry and look for future opportunities for Hoosiers.

We also celebrated a $44 million award from ARPA-H to West Lafayette-based 34 Lives. 34 Lives is working to save lives through innovation with kidney donations, and funding from ARPA-H will allow it to scale up its impressive operation and make an even greater impact.
