Leveling the Playing Field for American Workers

I introduced the Leveling the Playing Field 2.0 Act to strengthen U.S. trade remedy laws and ensure they remain effective tools to fight against unfair trade practices and protect American workers.

This bill would improve the U.S. trade remedy system and respond to repeat offenders and serial cheaters, leveling the playing field for American workers. The bill also responds to China’s unfair trade practices, specifically its Belt and Road Initiative, which provides subsidies to China-based or China-operated companies doing business in countries outside of China.

China has distorted the free market by dumping undervalued products and subsidizing industries, actions designed to harm American businesses and workers. This legislation will help to ensure the United States can outcompete the Chinese Communist Party.

Protecting American Farmland from Foreign Adversaries

Nearly two-thirds of land in Indiana – and more than half of all land in the United States – is farmland. Recent efforts by China and other adversaries to buy agricultural land across the country could present a national security threat. Indiana is a leader in restricting these purchases, but Congress must act to ensure permanent safeguards are in place in all fifty states.

I joined with U.S. Senator Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) in introducing the Protecting American Agriculture from Foreign Adversaries Act, which would permanently add the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States to help prevent improper foreign interference and disruption to the U.S. agriculture industry.

Addressing the Rise in Cargo Theft

Image

As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, Freight, Pipelines, and Safety, I convened a subcommittee hearing titled “Grand Theft Cargo: Examining a Costly Threat to Consumers to the U.S. Supply Chain.”

This hearing focused on the rise in cargo theft, and specifically on crimes within the supply chain like brokering scams, fraudulent trucking companies, and train robberies by highly organized gangs. The hearing examined potential solutions, including increased coordination and enforcement by federal agencies like the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Department of Homeland Security to stop these criminal enterprises.

During my opening remarks, I highlighted how PFL, a third-party logistics company in Evansville, Indiana, lost a $60,000 shipment when its cargo was stolen by a previously trusted carrier.
