Protecting U.S. National Security on BioTech

When you hear about biotechnology, you might think about medicine on your counter, but it’s a whole lot more than that. It’s the materials used in our defense systems, our supply chains, and our manufacturing facilities across the U.S.
China is investing heavily in these technologies, and America can’t afford to get left behind. Our dangerous dependence on China for our most critical supplies makes us vulnerable. In this era of global competition, we need to promote American innovation and American values and end China’s global supply chain grip. It is now an imperative for national security, economic power, and global influence. Biotechnology can ensure our warfighters continue to be the strongest fighting force on tomorrow’s battlefields, and reshore supply chains while revitalizing our manufacturing sector, creating jobs here at home.
I serve as the Chair of the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology (NSCEB), and this week we delivered a major report and action plan to Congress. The Commission’s top assessment is that urgent action is needed to bring the full weight of American innovation to bear on the biotechnology challenge and maintain U.S. global leadership in this transformative area.
