SHIPS for America Act Introduced

Image

I joined a bipartisan group of House and Senate colleagues to introduce the SHIPS for America Act, a comprehensive bill to revitalize America’s shipbuilding industry and strengthen our maritime capabilities in the face of growing global competition—especially from China.

The U.S. has just 80 internationally operating, U.S.-flagged vessels, while China has 5,500. The SHIPS for America Act will address this gap by cutting regulatory red tape, restoring our shipyard industrial base, increasing demand for steel and other goods that go into ship construction, and investing in recruitment, training, and retention for mariners and shipyard workers. It also establishes national oversight and consistent funding for maritime policy to make U.S.-flagged vessels more competitive on the global stage.

America has always been a maritime nation, and seapower has been central to our national strength. This legislation treats shipbuilding as a national security priority—essential for economic resilience, global trade, and defense readiness.

Addressing the Housing Affordability Crisis

Many American families are struggling to find a safe, affordable place to call home. Currently, nearly one-in-four renters, over 11 million families, spend more than half of their household income on rent, cutting into other essential expenses like child care, medication, groceries, and transportation. At the same time, over 600,000 Americans are experiencing homelessness on any given day, an increase over pre-COVID levels.

I recently introduced legislation to help build nearly 1.6 million new affordable homes over the next decade. The Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act would lead to more affordable housing options for families and workers by expanding and strengthening the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, our country’s most successful affordable housing program.

Affordable housing is needed in Indiana and across the country. This bill will leverage private sector investment to increase the stock of affordable housing in both urban and rural communities.

Recognizing Spring Interns

Image

I want to thank students who participated in spring internships in my Indianapolis and Washington, D.C. offices. They assisted with daily activities and special projects related to legislation, communications, and constituent services.

Sarah Dawood, a sophomore from Carmel attending Indiana University Indianapolis, interned in Indianapolis. The Washington D.C intern class included (as pictured from left to right) Jon Zimpfer, a junior from Zionsville attending Indiana University Bloomington; Anna Schlueter, a junior from Noblesville attending Indiana University Bloomington; Taylor Stinefield, a junior from Alexandria attending Indiana University Bloomington; and John Vranas, a sophomore attending the University of Notre Dame.

My office offers internship opportunities year-round, in both my Indiana and Washington, D.C. offices. Students who are interested in applying can click here or call 202-224-5623 to learn more.

We Need to Protect Americans' Genomic Data

As the Chinese government has realized, genomic data is incredibly valuable. Biological data is critical to biomedical discovery, particularly when it contains personalized information about individuals. It can be used to create, design, and optimize everything from medicines and medical devices to AI models for medical applications.

I joined Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.) in writing to leadership at the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) expressing the need for the agencies to exercise all available authorities to protect the sensitive genomic information of Americans, including in the bankruptcy proceedings of 23andMe, a personal genomics and biotechnology company that holds the DNA and sensitive information of millions of Americans.

We highlighted the attempts by China and other foreign adversaries to collect this type of genomic data from Americans and the various ways in which China has used sensitive biometric data for surveillance efforts.
