Protecting Our Homeland

We are deeply grateful to the brave American service members who carried out the recent mission to dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Iran cannot be permitted to obtain a nuclear weapon.

We are also thankful that no U.S. personnel were harmed in Iran’s retaliatory strikes on our bases. At this critical moment, all Americans should keep our men and women in uniform in their thoughts and prayers. As President Trump has made clear, the United States will not tolerate attacks on our people.

In light of heightened tensions, the FBI has ramped up efforts to monitor potential Hezbollah-linked sleeper cells within the U.S.—a serious threat tied to Iran and brought further into focus by Israel’s Operation Rising Lion.

This is not a new concern. I warned in 2023: “I am conjecturing that there are probably sleeper cells in our country, and the threat of terrorist activity is driven in part by that porous Southern border.”

This is exactly why we must prioritize border security and reverse the Biden Administration’s reckless open-border policies. Border security is national security. Read more.

SHIPS Act Could Benefit Hoosier Workers

Image

I recently wrote a column in the Northwest Indiana Times about my SHIPS Act and how it could benefit Hoosiers. While building more American ships is good for our national security, it also will provide new opportunities for American workers, including in our state.

Indiana is home to three ports and the Corn Island Shipyard in Spencer County. Hoosier steel manufacturers could benefit from the increased need for steel to build these new ships. Small component manufacturers across the state would likely see additional demand. Since the bill’s introduction, numerous Hoosier small businesses have shared how the SHIPS Act could lead to more growth or opportunities for their workers.

Reviving American shipbuilding will take time and come at a cost — but the cost of failing to act is even greater. Congress should pass the SHIPS Act to keep pace with China, support American workers, and reclaim U.S. maritime supremacy.

Modernizing America's Rail Networks

Image

Last week, I chaired a Senate Commerce Subommittee hearing on modernizing America's rail networks. We focused on the state of the U.S. freight and passenger rail network, with an emphasis on enhancing safety, improving efficiency, fostering innovation, and ensuring the long-term viability of the nation’s rail infrastructure to move American energy, goods, and people.

During my opening remarks, I highlighted how Indiana plays a central role in national rail logistics. Projects like the South Shore Line and West Lake Corridor show how public-private partnerships can deliver big results, enhancing safety and regional connectivity.
