Academy Day 2025

High school students interested in learning more about America’s service academies are invited to attend my upcoming Academy Day on August 18. This meeting is an opportunity to learn more about the admissions process and what life is like at the United States Military Academy, the United States Naval Academy, the United States Air Force Academy, and the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Representatives from each academy will be on hand to answer questions.

Harnessing Biotechnology for Economic and National Security 

I recently spoke with Issues in Science and Technology about how biotechnology is reshaping America’s future—and what we must do to stay ahead.

As Chair of the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology, I have seen firsthand how breakthroughs in biotech can drive economic growth, transform agriculture, strengthen our military, and revitalize manufacturing across the Midwest.

From AI-enabled drug discovery to battlefield biomanufacturing, the coming bioconvergence will redefine global power. Now is the time for Congress and the administration to act—with urgency—to ensure this revolution happens here in the United States, under our values and leadership.

I met Indiana’s 2025 The StartEdUp Foundation's Innovate WithIN State Champions during their trip to Washington. These bright young entrepreneurs are driving the future of Hoosier innovation.

 Supporting Hoosier Small Businesses

Last week, I joined with a group of Senate colleagues to introduce the Investing in Main Street Act. This bill would increase investment in small businesses by permitting banks to invest up to 15 percent of their capital in Small Business Investment Companies (SBIC). 

In 1958, the Small Business Administration launched the SBIC program to facilitate and regulate investment from privately owned companies to U.S. small businesses. This program has successfully allowed more small businesses across America to expand their competitive edge, create more jobs, and contribute to the local economy. Over the last five years, SBICs have invested nearly $549 million to 109 small businesses throughout Indiana.

This program has provided critical support to countless Hoosier small businesses. Our legislation will help spur further investment in innovative startups and unlock capital for existing, high-growth small businesses across America.

I enjoyed meeting with students attending Indiana University in Bloomington who are participating in the D.C. Global Leadership Forum this summer. 

I appreciated their desire to be engaged in the civic process and make a difference.

Taiwanese Representative to the U.S.

Last week, I had a good meeting with Alexander Yui, Taiwan’s Representative to the United States, to discuss areas of cooperation including semiconductor manufacturing, AI-related supply chains, and economic partnerships in Indiana.

Taiwan is on the frontlines of aggression by the People’s Republic of China, and I’m proud to stand in support of this important ally.
