Formally Ending the Iraq Wars

For years, I have worked to pass legislation to repeal the 1991 and 2002 Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMFs) against Iraq. The 1991 and 2002 AUMFs are no longer necessary, and leaving them on the books carries risk of potential misuse.

The House of Representatives voted to repeal the 1991 and 2002 AUMFs in June 2021. The Senate did so in March 2023, but because the votes did not occur during the same congressional session, the legislation did not become law.

I was pleased that the House again passed this legislation last week. The House’s overwhelming support for repealing these AUMFs is a critical step forward in reasserting Congress’ role in decisions of war and peace, and keeping U.S. servicemembers safe.

Since the Senate has previously voted to repeal these AUMFs with a strong bipartisan majority, I will do all I can to ensure that this effort goes to the President’s desk. Americans voted to end forever wars, and I'll continue working with House and Senate colleagues to make sure this long-overdue change becomes law. Read more about this effort here.

Visiting with Honor Flight Heroes

Image
It was a privilege to spend time with Hoosier heroes who were in D.C. with Honor Flight Northeast Indiana. We are grateful for your service.

I also want to thank the Walorski Family Foundation for helping to make last week's flight possible. The late Indiana Congresswoman Jackie Walorski was an incredible advocate for our veterans.

Protecting Our Kids by Helping to Prevent Illegal Passings of Stopped School Buses

I joined Senator Gary Peters (D-Mich.) in introducing the Brake for Kids Act, legislation to increase public awareness about the dangers of illegally passing a stopped school bus.

Every school year, far too many illegal school bus passings occur, which puts the lives of students at risk. Our bill will raise awareness about the dangers of passing a stopped school bus to help ensure that our kids make it to and from school safely.
