Serving Hoosiers During the Federal Government Shutdown

The federal government is currently shut down, but my team and I are still working and available to Hoosiers.

Touring Corn Island Shipyard in Southwest Indiana as SHIPS for America Act Support Grows

Image

I toured Corn Island Shipyard in Spencer County to learn more about its operations, Hoosier workforce, and manufacturing of custom barges.

Earlier this year, Senator Mark Kelly and I introduced the Shipbuilding and Harbor Infrastructure for Prosperity and Security (SHIPS) for America Act, comprehensive legislation to revitalize the American shipbuilding and commercial maritime industries.

Passing our SHIPS for America Act will increase opportunities for American shipyards like Corn Island. Shipbuilding is a national security priority and a stopgap against foreign threats and coercion. Our bill will revitalize the U.S. maritime industry, grow our shipbuilding capacity, rebuild America’s shipyard industrial base, and support nationwide workforce development in this industry. This legislation is critical to keeping pace with China.

Last week, five U.S. unions called on Congress to pass the SHIPS for America Act in a letter, adding to the growing list of supportive organizations.

BXWT in Mount Vernon

Last week, I toured BXWT's facility in Posey County. This facility helps power our Navy’s nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines. BWXT has also partnered with state and local government to pioneer a cutting-edge workforce training program that helps our high school students gain the skills to secure high quality jobs. This is a prime example of how Hoosiers are contributing to our national defense.

Supporting Rural Health Care

I joined Congressman Rudy Yakym (R-IN-02) and a majority of the Indiana Congressional delegation in sending a letter to Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz urging HHS to allocate the highest possible level of funding from the newly established Rural Health Transformation Program to Indiana.

Indiana is home to 42 rural counties, and our rural communities play a vital role in feeding the nation and supporting our economy. Yet, they face some of the most significant health care challenges in the country. Allocating the highest possible funding to Indiana will help us protect access to care, keep hospital doors open, and ensure healthier futures for Hoosiers.

Investigate TV Report on Cargo Theft

Image

I spoke with Investigate TV for a report about the growing impact of cargo theft on American businesses and consumers.

The report examines the recent surge in cargo theft across the nation and its significant impact on America’s supply chains. It also highlights how Congress is partnering with industry leaders and government agencies to address this issue, including through the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act.

I joined with a group of senators to put forward this legislation, which would establish a coordinated multi-agency response and provide new tools to address evolving trends in organized retail and cargo theft.
