Increase Housing Options for All Hoosiers

We need to increase the supply of available housing for Americans of all income levels. I’ve introduced a bill that encourages communities to cut burdensome regulations and promote housing options without encroaching on the rights of states and localities.

Establishing Indiana's Drone Taskforce

Drones are increasingly critical to our economy and national security, and as a leading manufacturing state, Indiana is positioned to help unleash innovation in American drone manufacturing and deployment.

Last week, Indiana Governor Mike Braun (R-Ind.) issued an executive order positioning our state to lead in the federal government’s mission of American drone dominance. Over the past several months, my team has worked hand in hand with Governor Braun’s team on developing this executive order.

The executive order establishes the Indiana Initiative for Drone Dominance Task Force, which will develop a strategic plan for how the state can utilize our unique attributes to lead the nation in this important sector. This includes our robust advanced manufacturing industry, expertise from NSWC Crane and industry, restricted airspace over assets like Camp Atterbury and Muscatatuck Urban Training Center, and universities with established programs to further drone research, development, and manufacturing.

The new task force will coordinate efforts across government, academia, and industry to support President Trump’s Unleashing American Drone Dominance and Restoring American Airspace Sovereignty executive orders, which set a national goal for American leadership in drone technology and airspace security.

Governor Braun has been a great partner on this issue, and I look forward to continuing to work with the Governor and Hoosier stakeholders to support the President’s executive order and empower the U.S. drone industry.

U.S. Must Outcompete China on Biotechnology

Image

Picture a world where most life-saving medicines are discovered not in the United States, but in Beijing and Shanghai. Imagine a time when the most advanced biotechnologies—therapies that cure cancer and Alzheimer's, protect us from pandemics and fuel our economy—are controlled not by America, but by our chief global adversary. That is the future we risk drifting into soon if we do not act now to secure and advance American dominance in biotechnology.

Today, America still leads the world in biotechnology. But China is fast closing the gap and is close to overtaking us. Chinese dominance in biotechnology would have dire, even existential, consequences for our economy and our national security. It would leave Americans dependent on an authoritarian rival for critical medicines, giving China and its allies tremendous global influence.

This is no ordinary competition. The biotech race is the defining technological contest of the 21st century—just as the Space Race defined the 20th. But this time, there may be no dramatic "Sputnik moment" to jolt us into action.

And in a century defined by constantly evolving technology, if we lose our lead, we may never get it back.

I joined with John Crowley, the President and CEO of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO), in penning a column in Newsweek outlining policy solutions.

National Veterans Small Business Week

This week is National Veterans Small Business Week, and I’m proud the Senate passed a resolution I helped introduce to honor America’s veteran entrepreneurs. On Monday, I stopped by Brew Link Brewing, a veteran-owned business in Indianapolis. Let’s keep supporting our veterans and their businesses in our communities.
