Time for Democrats to Fund DHS, Protect Our National Security

When the shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) began nearly 30 days ago, Democrats called for significant reforms to ICE in exchange for DHS funding. Since then, the Trump administration has made a number of changes at ICE to ensure the agency is focused on its mission of bringing criminal illegal aliens to justice. In the Senate, Republicans have attempted to negotiate in good faith on a series of ICE reforms Democrats support, including body cameras, deescalation training, and additional oversight of ICE activities. Yet still, Democrats refuse to fund DHS.

The current DHS shutdown affects far more than just ICE. It impacts TSA agents and has resulted in flight delays for Americans across the country. It impacts our Coast Guard, FEMA, Border Patrol, and cybersecurity and critical infrastructure teams defending against foreign attacks.

In this time of war, I am particularly concerned that leaving the Department of Homeland Security unfunded is a national security risk. It is time to end this shutdown and protect our homeland. Senate Democrats should join Republicans and fully fund DHS.

We Need to Know the Impact of AI on America's Workforce

Image

I joined with some of my Senate colleagues in writing a letter urging the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Census Bureau to expand data collection and public reporting on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the U.S. workforce.

As AI technologies are rapidly developed, deployed, and integrated across industries, Americans will increasingly need reliable federal data to understand how these changes are reshaping the labor market and how lawmakers, workers, and businesses should respond.

Read more about this effort here. Read the full letter here.

Supporting Hoosier Veterans

I met with Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs Director Jake Adams and his team about ongoing efforts to better support our Hoosier veterans.

Advancing America's Semiconductor Industry

Image

I was honored to receive the 2026 SEMI Americas Government Leadership Award for my efforts to ensure that semiconductors remain at the core of America’s national and economic security. It is imperative that we continue pushing forward good policies to secure our critical infrastructure rather than relying on China.
